On the article Cut Access to Marijuana, Spread the Word That It Harms Kids

Reply"...Rhode Island must reduce access to marijuana by children and focus on spreading the word that it is harmful as supported by medical evidence..."
You do that by legalizing so you have control over the industry and decide who can buy it and have regulations in place to stop under age sale of the drug and with the tax proceeds you fund a sold state wide prevention and education program. It is truly a win win situation for the community and our kids.

Reply"..So why in the world would we every want to legalize another drug that clearly impairs the user and most likely causes more lung damage & cancer than cigarettes.."
I don't see it as adding another intoxicant, I see it as adding a safe alternative. If smoking marijuana causer cancer, where are the bodies? Millions of people smoke marijuana and have been for thousands of years yet not one case study of lung cancer due solely to marijuana has ever been produced. By the way taxing legal marijuana could give way for more treatment and prevention programs like you mention the community needs more of .

Does it matter where I live? If I didn't live in Foxborough I would still be entitled to my opinion regardless if it affects me directly or not, everyone is, it's up to you if you want to take into regard or not.

I respect your opinion but police officers job is to enforce the law and protect and serve the community; not to legislate for or against any laws, I agree he shouldn't be silent but he shouldn't be biased either, he should be neutral and let our voice and our civil leaders decide the laws. That aside, I would respect his opinion if it was even well founded but it's not, his perspective on the issue shows his ignorance on the matter and takes away from his credibility as a person of the law. I would much rather have an informed Chief of Police that doesn't get himself too involved in legislating new laws than having someone like O'Leary sticking his neck out for something he has no idea what he's talking about and seeming ignorant and outdated while doing it. I rather raise my kids with the truth and science based logic than with hysteria and propaganda. Then you wonder why your kids lie to you and don't trust you when they get older.

ReplyViolence around dispensaries is a myth; here's a study to debunk it:

In my own personal opinion the Wrentham Board of Selectmen are being cowards of progress. The people have voted for this and in great majority, it's time to honor the vote of your people (you know the same one who pay your salaries to do your job). Time to put on some big boy pants and do what you gotta do.

Reply"...“In states that have allowed the creative fiction of ‘medical marijuana,’ there has been an increase of drug use by teenagers, and an escalation of violent crimes in neighborhoods with dispensing stations,”.."
False. In Colorado where there are more dispensaries than Starbucks, Marijuana use by teens as actually gone down and below the national average. Read the article here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/07/marijuana-usage-down-in-t_n_1865095.html.
Chief O'Leary seems to think that California is the only state that has implemented this law because it's all he talks about; California is the worst model to take idea from in the country. Besides doesn't he know that Marijuana is out there already and it's pretty abundant?? All this does is allow people who need it for medical reasons to not have to hide to get what works for them, it may not be medicine for some but for these people that use it it's what works for them. I think chief O'Leary is just scared of what he doesn't know and understand but by his ignorance he's creating a vacuum in credibility on himself and his department.

False. In fact in Colorado where medical marijuana is legal, youth use has gone down. Check out the report here; http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/07/marijuana-usage-down-in-t_n_1865095.html
Drug dealers are out there down and have always been and they don't i.d. nor care if you have a doctors recommendation or not and while they're trying to sell you weed they will also try and sell you cocaine or even heroin. At least this will not happen in a dispensary and people who truly need it will get relief. It's funny how people say it will create more access for youth when now is when they have the greatest access ever, there's street dealers everywhere and it's far easier to get weed now than booze and that's without a dispensary so I don't know how much worse could it get. At least with a dispensary we start to have control over the market which now is fully in the hands of criminals and organized crime.

On the article Dolan: No Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

I understand your logic but didn't the voters know about the dispensaries already when they voted for this law? It is obvious that if you approve this law you also approve of dispensaries which is clearly stated in the ballot that 35 dispensaries would open; one has to assume that one of these 35 will be near where you live. Voters know what the consequences of their YES vote meant, believe it or not.

So never mind the underage drinking part which by the way can lead to violent behavior and rape, specially among teens and college students, no let's pay more attention and even arrest them for the marijuana brownies; because we all know how much more deadly and instigating a brownie is than a bottle of goose!
