Wrentham School Committee Talks Budget

Committee speaks on district receiving level-services budget.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee, at its meeting Tuesday night, indicated satisfaction at it's funding level in the budget the town selectmen are sending to the Finance Committee. Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden said he and committee Chairman Edward Goddard had attended the meeting in which selectmen discussed the matter. "The town manager presented a budget that would give us a 5.9 percent increase," he said. "The board brought it up to 6.1 percent to give us a level-service budget." Goddard said the process was much better than that in previous years, but added it was not over yet. "Ultimately, the Finance Committee makes its own recommendation," he said. "We're happy, though we didn't get everything we wanted." Marsden said he …

Wrentham Special Education Parent Council Seeks Participation

Council gave presentation at school committee meeting.

The Wrentham Special Education Parent Advisory Council is looking to get more parents involved in its efforts. The council gave an update on its recent actions at the Wrentham Elementary School Committee meeting Tuesday night. Ruth Walker, the co-chairwoman of the council, said the group hopes to make things easier for parents of children in the special education program. "We decided to create a binder for parents coming in with special education children," she said. "We hope this will help them feel organized, and not overwhelmed by paperwork." Walker said the group wants to increase its visibility. "We have bulletin boards in each school," she said. "We also have a Facebook page, which has a link on the school website. The biggest …

Wrentham Elementary Presents Budget to Public

Public hearing held to present elementary school budget proposal to the town.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee presented its budget proposal to the public at its meeting Tuesday night. District Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden explained the $9.7 million budget to town citizens, noting that the primary cost drivers were additional positions, the loss of a federal grant and technology. "This budget would be a 7.7 percent increase," he said. "A level-service budget would still be a six percent increase." Marsden said the district spent substantially less than the two other towns that comprise the King Philip region. "This is all about what you value as a town," he said. "If we spent as much per student as Norfolk or Plainville, [the budget] would be $1.4 million to $1.8 million higher." Committee Chairman Edward …

Sorry about the school budget. There is no way this increase should be expected at this point in time. I do not disagree with the needs But are these needs or wants. I am in computers and the increase for technology is a want not a need. Taxpayers are just plain tapped out. Churches, schools local, state, federal all want money but the economy has not improved to a level that has first provided a…   more ›

Wrentham Elementary 2012-2013 School Calendar Approved

School year will begin in August.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee approved a school calendar for the 2012-2013 year at its meeting Tuesday night. The calendar would start the school year on August 28, a few days before Labor Day. District Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden said the schools have been starting their year in August recently because of issues with when the school year would end. "There were districts last year that were concerned their school years would extend through July," he said. "State law doesn't allow that." With this calendar, Marsden said, the district would avoid that issue. "This would get us out on June 17 instead of June 21, as we would if we started after Labor Day," he said. Marsden's proposal had no school on November 6, the day of the …

Wrentham Elementary Committee Reviews Superintendent

Committee talks about superintendent performance review.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee discussed its review of district Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden at its meeting Tuesday night. Edward Goddard, the chairman of the school committee, said the overall feedback was quite positive. "We're very pleased with your work," he said. "There were comments about your accumen with the budget and your ability to work with the staff — you got high marks on all that stuff." Goddard said the board had extended Marsden's contract as a result of his good work. "We're looking forward to continuing to work with you," he said. He said the committee would be examining areas for improvement at its next meeting. The committee also talked about its self-review, which Goddard said was generally good. "There's …

Wrentham Elementary School Committee Greenlights Budget

The school committee submits a $9.7 million budget to the finance committee.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee decided to approve a $9.7 million budget proposal at its meeting Tuesday night. The proposed budget would be a 7.7 percent increase over fiscal year 2012's $9 million budget. Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden said, after years of low budgets, the time had come to reinvest in the district. He said, in fiscal years 2010, 2011 and 2012, the district had seen a budget cut of one percent, a flat budget and a budget increase of 4.2 percent, respectively. Most school budgets, Marsden said, increase every year. "In fiscal year 2010, we lost four classroom teacher positions that we have not gotten back and 17 aides. In fiscal year 2011, we had to cut 17 aides' hours," he said. "Right now is the time to start …

Wrentham Elementary Schools Forge Ahead with Budget

Headway being made in budget process.

One year after a tough budget process, the Wrentham Elementary Schools are looking to compose a new budget for the coming year. The school budget ran into problems last year, as the district was looking at a $489,000 deficit. A debt exclusion failed at the polls, but citizens decided to allocate $120,000 to the schools from the stabilization account at town meeting. District Superintendent Jeff Marsden said the school committee would be meeting to decide whether to put forward the superintendent's recommended budget or a level-services budget. "A level-services budget would represent an increase of about 5.98 percent, and provides us with exactly what we have right now," he said. "In years past, we've actually had below level-services …
