A freshman at the University of Maryland, Jake Layman is going to get a chance to play in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden Tuesday.
Wrentham's Jake Layman scored 13 points as the University of Maryland men's basketball team defeated the University of Alabama, 58-57, in Tuscaloosa in the quarterfinals of the NIT Tuesday night. Maryland will now move on to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City to play Iowa, April 2. "We know the history behind the place and how special it is to play there and who's played there, so it's going to be awesome," said Layman of playing in Madison Square Garden. With the win, the Terrapins improved to 25-12 on the year and are making their first trip to the NIT semifinals since 2005 and are looking for their first title since 1972. Former King Philip standout Jake Layman and his University of Maryland men's basketball teammates dropped a decision to Boston College Tuesday.
In his return to the area as a college basketball player, King Philip standout Jake Layman scored five points, grabbed six rebounds and had a steal as the University of Maryland men's basketball team was upset by Boston College, 69-59, Tuesday at Chestnut Hill. Layman, a freshman, started at guard for Maryland. With the loss, Maryland fell to 18-8 overall, but they are 6-7 in the ACC. Maryland is battling for a NCAA tournament spot and might need a strong showing at the ACC Tournament to get in this year. Next up for Maryland is a Saturday home showdown with Clemson at noon.

Former King Philip High standout Jake Layman scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds for his starting guard spot at the University of Maryland men's basketball team defeated Duke, 83-81, in a thriller Saturday night on ESPN. A freshman, Layman has earned a spot for Maryland, who will be at Boston College Tuesday night for a 9 p.m. game against the Eagles. The game will be shown on ACC Network. Layman has appeared in every game for the 18-7 Terrapins, starting nine games, while averaging 5.5 points per game.
