Hopkinton Ends KP's Season Again

Hillers come out aggressively and hold on for a 70-64 victory.

King Philip and Hopkinton are somewhat familiar with one another, having met last year in the Division 2 South Championship game at UMASS Lowell. Unfortunately for the Warriors, their quarterfinal matchup with the Hillers this year ended up the same way. Hopkinton held on to beat King Philip 70-64 in Attleboro. Although the final score was only decided by six points, this game was never really that close. Hopkinton, the six seed and visitor, held a double digit lead over KP throughout the majority of the contest. While the Hillers came out very aggressively, the Warriors were having trouble getting into a flow and no matter what they put up nothing seemed to fall their way. In addition to not scoring, the Warriors were turning the ball …

KP Basketball Win Sets Up Hopkinton Rematch

Tournament win sets up rematch from last year.

Last year, the Hopkinton Hillers ended the King Philip boys basketball team's MIAA tournament run in the finals. KP will be looking to return the favor on Thursday. The KP team, the number three seed in the tournament, advanced by virtue of a 83-68 win over Whitman-Hanson (the 14 seed) Tuesday night at Taunton. The boys are now in the Division 2 South quarterfinals. Hopkinton, a number six seed, moved on to this game thanks to a 59-39 win over 11-seeded Scituate. The rematch will take place at the Attleboro High School at 7pm. Should KP take the win tomorrow, they would move on to face either Randolph or Wellesley. KP defeated Wellesley in last year's tournament. Check Wrentham Patch on Thursday for live tweets from the KP-Hopkinton game …

KP Basketball Moves On To D2 South Quarterfinals

Jake Layman had 17 points and 19 rebounds, while John Mullane had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors beat Whitman-Hanson 83-68 in the opening round of the MIAA Division 2 South tournament.

For a home team that wasn’t really a home team, the King Philip Warriors boys basketball team and their fans did everything they could to make it a home game. While there was a lack of green and yellow painted on the court and the gym was a little bigger than what many from KP are used to, the noise from the crowd alone made it a home game. “I know the players win the game but those people behind us really did a great job supporting us,” KP head coach Sean McInnis said. At times close but holding the lead for most of the game, the Warriors advanced to the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional basketball tournament with an 83-68 win over the Whitman-Hanson Panthers at Taunton High School. A height disadvantage forced the …

King Philip will play Whitman-Hanson in opening round Tuesday in Taunton.

The King Philip boys basketball team has garnered a three seed in the MIAA tournament, but won't be getting a home game. KP, which finished with a 17-3 record and the team will be in the Division 2 South bracket. The boys team advanced far in the tournament last year, but took a tough loss to Hopkinton in the finals. KP Boys Beat OA Despite Missing Jake Layman

Warriors defeat Oliver Ames, 56-52, to wrap up regular season.

With Jake Layman sitting on the bench, the rest of his King Philip teammates showed that they didn’t need the big man to win as the Warriors outlasted Oliver Ames 56-52 in the Hockomock Crossover Classic. It was PJ Lydon who got the home team on the board first, but it was John Mullane who stepped up early in Layman’s absence. The senior scored eight of KP’s first 10 points to give the Warriors the early lead. “This game was about staying on course, knowing what we wanted to do and not going away from it,” King Philip Coach Sean McInnis said. “We had a gameplan and we stayed the course; we believed in them and they believed in our gameplan. The guys are sick of hearing that, when Jake leaves, they’re going to go back to the old KP — this …

King Philip boys' hoops team holds on against Attleboro

Attleboro High battled back in the fourth quarter, but did not have enough to beat King Philip and lost 70-65.

When asked after the win over North Attleboro, whether his team had enough to beat King Philip, Attleboro senior guard J.J. Jolaoso responded confidently, "Of course. I think we can compete with anyone." Tuesday night he almost single-handedly proved that to be true. The Attleboro High Bombardiers, led by 29 points from Jolaoso, made a strong fourth quarter push to pull the upset and stay alive in the hunt for the postseason but KP held on, in a typically difficult night on the road in the Hockomock League, 70-65. The Bombardiers (7-12) were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss. KP led by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter but Attleboro stormed back, finishing the game on a 13-4 run. The comeback started routinely enough …

North Attleboro No Match For King Philip Basketball

Warriors use defense to create offense and run all over the Red Rocketeers, 63-38.

On paper, it looked like a total mismatch: one-win North Attleboro visiting 12-win King Philip on senior night.  When all was said and done, the final outcome was what everyone expected it to be, as the Warriors took it to the Red Rocketeers, 63-38, in a Hockomock League battle. Prior to the game, the six seniors (Mike Schmidt, Jake Layman, Christian Fair, Connor Smith, John Mullane and Mike Viola) were introduced with their parents, but once the game started, it was down to business. King Philip’s defense was stifling as North Attleboro was never able to really get anything going as the Warrior’s held the visitors to under 10 points in each of the first three quarters.  “That’s the way that we were playing defense at the beginning of the …

KP Boys Basketball Beats Mansfield

Mansfield lost to KP on Friday 46-35 in a battle for rebounds.

The King Philip boys varsity basketball team beat Mansfield on Friday 46-35 in a grudge match of rebounds, interceptions and jump balls. KP kept the score low intentionally, keeping Mansfield on the outside stopping many three pointers, and getting the rebounds. “We talked all week about rebounding,” said KP head coach Sean McInnis. “We talked about finding the closest guy and getting a body on him. In that first couple of games, we were going to get the ball, and we really talked about don’t go get the ball, find somebody, box them out and then go get the ball.” Mansfield started the game off strong, leading KP for nearly all of the first period. The second period saw KP and Mansfield battling back and forth to hold a lead, and the half …
