New England Patriots to Take on Baltimore Ravens

Ravens, Pats will square off in AFC Championship Game.

The playoffs have not been kind to offense-based teams this year. The regular season was dominated by three teams that play offense well, but defense poorly: the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots. All three entered the playoffs with high seeds. Only the Patriots remain. That's the primary reason for the Pats to be nervous about their game against the Ravens — that lingering sense that, even in this year of record-setting offense, defense will still win the day. There are some positive signs for the Pats, though. They're coming off their utter domination of the Denver Broncos, while the Ravens struggled mightily against the Houston Texans. The Ravens had trouble with both the Texans offensive and …

Patriots-Eagles Recap: Another Test Passed

Patriots take what had been their toughest remaining game.

The New England Patriots put together a really good performance in all phases of the game Sunday afternoon as they dispatched the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-20. Things did not look good in the early going, as the Pats D gave up an easy touchdown drive to the Eagles, including a 58-yard bomb from Vince Young to Riley Cooper. Things got worse when the offense went three-and-out, putting a confused defense back on the field. The D surrendered a field goal, but they would regroup and only allow 10 points the rest of the way. Here are some thoughts on the game: MVP: Tom Brady, quarterback. Brady regained his early-season form yesterday, looking accurate and comfortable from the second quarter on. He ended up with 361 yards and three touchdowns (it…

Things to Watch at Tonight's Patriots-Jets Game

The New England Patriots look to end a two-game skid on Sunday Night Football.

The Patriots are reeling after one of the rare back-to-back defeats in the Brady/Belichick era. Things don't get any easier tonight, as the Pats face off against a rejuvenated Jets team in New York on Sunday Night Football. Here are things to watch at tonight's game: Will Tom Brady end his slump? Brady was downright bad in the Giants game (until the fourth quarter, at least). He was off-target with many of his throws, leading to incompletions and interceptions. While some of this is due to the talent of the Giants D, one cannot deny that Brady was not his usual self. He was bailed out of several errant throws by Wes Welker, who has a talent for catching anything in his general area. Chad Ochocinco has drawn some fire for his lack of …

Things to Watch at the Patriots-Giants Game

Patriots look to rebound after last week's Steelers loss.

The New England Patriots, coming off a bad loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, will host the New York Giants today at 4:15pm. Here's some things to watch at today's game: The defensive backfield can't be this bad — can it? The Pats secondary looked positively hapless against the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger was able to complete passes at will, and this kept Brady off the field. The poor performance called the decision to release cornerback Leigh Bodden into question. Put simply, if this team's defense is as bad as they performed last Sunday, this team isn't going anywhere. The offense cannot be called upon to score on every possession. Eli Manning is a hot-and-cold quarterback, but he has a good corps of wide receivers (even with …

Patched Into the Patriots at Gillette

Patch takes you inside Gillette Stadium and the Patriots locker room for a new weekly column, "Patched into Gillette."

Bill Belichick took the podium inside the media room at Gillette Stadium Wednesday morning to talk about his plans for the bye week as well as what he said to his rookie players before they head out for a few well deserved days off.   "Bye week, practiced yesterday, practice today, see if we can improve in a few areas, then give the players an opportunity to get some rest, relax a little bit, get a way from Football for a couple days, then come back and get ready to go against the Steelers," spoke Belichick. "Hopefully we can take advantage of those couple days to catch up on some things that have piled up on all of us." When asked what his major plans were personally during the days off, Belichick smiled and said simply, "get some rest, …

Things to Watch at Today's Patriots-Cowboys Game

The Patriots face off against the Dallas Cowboys today at 4:15pm.

The New England Patriots are set to take on the up-and-down Dallas Cowboys this afternoon. Despite their struggles, the Cowboys look to be a tough test for this Pats team, so here are things to look out for. Will the defense continue its positive momentum? The much-maligned Patriots defense looked much better against the Jets last week. The question is, though, was that actual improvement or a reflection on the quality of their opposition? The Jets, after all, were reeling. Their gameplan was ridiculously conservative, and they did start to have success when they went to the pass late. The Cowboys present a bigger challenge. Tony Romo is talented (if mistake-prone) and he has very good receivers in Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. If the Pats …

Things to Watch at the Patriots-Jets Game

Things to look for in this afternoon's Patriots-Jets contest.

The New England Patriots are set to take on their bitter rivals, the New York Jets, this afternoon at 4:15pm. These games are usually tightly contested, so here's a list of things to watch for today. How will the Jets D attack the Pats? Rex Ryan typically attacked the Patriots offense (i.e., Tom Brady) through exotic blitzes. Ryan's strategy was to knock Brady into submission. That changed, though, after the Pats' regular season victory last season. Brady was able to eviscerate the Jets defense, posting 45 points. So, in the playoff rematch, Ryan was able to stymie Brady and company by going into extreme coverage. So which Jets defense will we see? Will coach Bill Belichick be able to adjust to that defense? There's a good chance that …
