The University of Maryland men's basketball team ended their season with a loss to Iowa in the N.I.T. semifinals Tuesday night.
Wrentham's Jake Layman scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds as the University of Maryland men's basketball team lost to Iowa, 71-60, in Tuesday's N.I.T. semifinals at Madision Square Garden. Maryland finished the season with a 25-13 record, while Iowa moves on to play Baylor in the finals after the Bears beat BYU, 76-70. Layman, who split time as a starter and reserve this year, went into the semifinals, averaging 5.5 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game. He started 17 out of 38 games with 24 block shots and 21 steals.

A freshman from Wrentham, Jake Layman will be on center stage and on ESPN-2 tonight as the University of Maryland faces the University of Iowa.
Wrentham's Jake Layman and his University of Maryland men's basketball teammates will be playing in the N.I.T. semifinals tonight at Madison Square in New York City. The game will be shown in ESPN-2 at 9 p.m. Maryland is bringing a 25-12 record into the game, while Iowa is at 24-12. The Terps got to the semifinals with a 58-57 win over Alabama. Maryland is playing in the NIT for the eighth time with a 14-6 record. They won the championship in 1972, beating Niagara, 100-69. For more on the game, go to the Maryland's web site.

Former King Philip High standout Jake Layman and his University of Maryland teammates beat Niagara, 86-70. They will now play Denver Thursday night in the second round.
Freshman Jake Layman scored five points and grabbed four rebounds after starting at forward in the University of Maryland men's basketball team's 86-70 win over Niagara in the National Invitational Tournament Tuesday at home. Maryland will now host Denver Thursday. This was the Terrapins' first postseason game since 2010 when they went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland is 12-6 in the N.I.T. tournament over the years. The only time they played Niagara was in 1972 N.I.T where the Terrapins posted a 100-69 win in the championship game.

Russ DeRemer and his Syracuse University men's basketball teammates will be in NCAA Tournament, while Jake Layman and his Maryland squads didn't make it.
One Wrentham native will be going to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, while another's was subbed by the tournament committee. Wrentham native Russ DeRemer, who is a junior guard for Syracuse, is headed for the postseason. DeRemer, who played for Xaverian, St. Andrews and Worcester Academy, appeared in 10 games this year for the Orangemen. He is also a top student-athlete at Syracuse. Syracuse has earned the No. 4 seed in the East and will compete in the East Regional. The Orange face No. 13 seed Montana in the second round Thursday, March 21 in San Jose, Calif. After being part of the rebuilding effort for the King Philip High boys' basketball team, Wrentham's Jake Layman is making a name for himself on the college ranks.
A year ago, Wrentham's Jake Layman was right in the middle of the turnaround of the King Philip boys' basketball team. Now, he's making a name for himself in the college ranks as a freshman starter at the University of Maryland. Layman was profiled in Tuesday's Boston Globe on the morning of his return home. Former King Philip standout Jake Layman has seven points, including a three-pointer in the University of Maryland men's basketball team's 67-45 win over Morehead State Monday night at home. In the first three games of the season, the freshman guard-forward had appeared in two games, average five points a game, playing 31 minutes. Maryland is 2-1 on the season, only losing to defending champion Kentucky. Maryland will be playing Long Island University-Brooklyn Friday night at home.
