Division 1 South Softball Tournament: Milford Edges Past King Philip in Extra Innings

Milford skirts by King Philipom nine innings.

It was billed as pitching duel between Milford's Shannon Smith and King Philip's Anna O'Neil in the Division 1 South quarterfinals Tuesday in Milford. That's exactly was it as Milford got the only run of the game, in the bottom of the ninth inning for the 1-0 win. Now, Milford will move on to play the winner of today's Franklin at Sandwich game in the semifinals Thursday at Taunton High. In the other semifinal match, Bridgewater-Raynham will face Silver Lake. “Anna pitched a heck of a game,” King Philip head coach Norm Beauchemin said. “She did a heck of a job. The last inning just went their way. I think these were the two best teams. It just wasn’t our day, but a heck of a try.” The game was 0-0 until the ninth inning, when Milford’s …

Sophomore Poirier Leads King Philip Past Norwood

The Warriors beat the Norwood Mustangs 3-1 to advance in the MIAA Division 1 South softball tournament.

With three King Philip players suspended for their tournament game against Norwood for violating team rules, it took an unfamiliar face to get the Warriors past the Stallions. It wasn’t until the day before the game that sophomore Renee Poirier got word she would start for KP but by the way she threw, it would be hard to assume that she pitched more than a handful of games this season. “A little surprised but excited, really excited to prove myself,” Poirier said of the chance to play. “I pitched that game for my captains because I did everything I could to make sure they weren't sitting down for their last game.” Behind the sophomores’ seven strikeouts, the Warriors beat the Stallions 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the MIAA …

Week in Review: Adult Business Zone Passes, King Philip Band Wins Nationals, Wrentham PD Arrest 4, and More

Wrentham Patch takes one last look at the week and all the news from around town.

Adult Entertainment Zone, Multiple Appropriations Pass Wrentham Town Meeting With a small warrant and a just as small crowd in attendance, last night’s Special Town Meeting quickly went by with only Article 4 being withdrawn and the remaining articles passing with no resistance. The most discussed item on the agenda was Article 7, which created a 20-acre adult entertainment zone near the Shire Industrial Park. After multiple attempts over the years to create the zone for adult businesses, the town voted to approve Article 7 at last night’s Special Town Meeting to create one that cannot even be accessed through Wrentham. To get near it, one has to drive though the industrial park in Norfolk. Under the new law, any business falling under the…

2 From King Philip Sign Letters of Intent to Play D1 College Softball

King Philip senior softball players Tori Constantin and Anna O'Neill both signed their letters of intent to play Division 1 college softball.

The King Philip girls’ softball team will send two more players to NCAA Division 1 teams next year. On the first day where high school athletes can sign their letter of intent to play for a college, second baseman Tori Constantin signed her letter to play for Central Connecticut State University and pitcher/first baseman Anna O’Neill will head to Macon, Georgia next fall to attend Mercer University. Both signed their letters in a special ceremony at Extra Innings in Wrentham surrounded by friends and family. After being recruited by the Bears, a trip down to Mercer last summer made O’Neill consider the school located in Central Georgia. During the trip, O’Neill was not only impressed with the campus, but with softball coach James DeFeo and…

King Philip Softball Heading Back To South Sectional Finals Sunday

Meg Rico struck out 17 and Cayleigh McCarthy hit a two-run homer as the Warriors beat Silver Lake 13-0. King Philip will face Bridgewater-Raynham at Taunton High at 3 p.m.

Two games into the MIAA Division I-South softball tournament, the No. 1 King Philip Warriors were just getting by with one and two run wins and the phenomenal pitching of senior Meg Rico. “I promised the team I will throw until I have to," Rico told her teammates earlier. " We just need to get a run. I will do anything I can in my power to not let them get runs so just work your hardest and put some runs on the boards.” Rico got the run support she was looking for in the Warriors' 13-0 win over the No. 5 Silver Lake Lakers in the semifinal round of the tournament, Saturday in Taunton. “We’re a good, solid hitting team; it’s just a matter of getting the repetitions kind of necessary,” KP head coach Jim Leonard said. The Warriors will now …
