After seven months of hard work, the King Philip Marching Band closed out their successful 2011 season on November 12 at Navy Marine Corp Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland at the USSBA National Championship. Ninety-eight middle and high school students, plus staff and an army of parent chaperones, traveled to Maryland where the band gave their final competitive performance of their successful season of their show, “The Gallery.” Under blue skies and a mild breeze the band competed against 20 bands from up and down the East Coast. The Pride and the Passion brought everything they had and ended the day in second place with a score of 96.875, six one hundredths of a point off of the first place score. The band was also awarded "Best Overall …

Program was one of recommendations by district fine arts committee.
The King Philip School Committee heard a report on arts instruction at its meeting Monday night. One of the recommendations of the report was that the music program add instruction for string instruments. Are you in favor of the addition?

Presentation: good programs, but could improve.
The King Philip School Committee heard the results of an examination of the district's arts instruction at its meeting Monday night. Assistant Superintendent and middle school Principal Susan Gilson presented the findings, compiled by a subcommittee. "We took a look at the program of studies, really examining the question: 'Are we currently able to offer comprehensive arts instruction?'" she said. She said that group had sent out a survey, among other efforts. "In the scope of a week, 327 people responded," she said. "We also did a comprehensive comparison of school districts." Gilson said the district's instruction was compared to other Hockomock League schools, other regional school districts and school districts with comparable per-…

The King Philip Gridiron Club president spoke to the school committee about the matter.
The King Philip School Committee is looking at the costs of installing a synthetic field at the high school's stadium, as frequent use of the current grass field has eroded its quality. The recent fix to the school's wastewater treatment problem has, according to district officials, limited the number of fields available, placing even more stress on the stadium field. Rich Harwood, president of the KP Gridiron Club, said the field could not be used any more. "The usage of the field right now is at its saturation point," he said. "We looked at replacing the field with natural grass, but this is a cyclical problem." Harwood said planting a new grass field would not solve the issue. "No one could use it for two years," he said. "Once they did…

Numerous parents came to Monday's KP School Committee meeting to keep the music director teaching only music.
Parents came to Monday night's King Philip School Committee meeting to protest a plan that would have the school's music director teach a history course. The parents claimed Music Director Joshua Wolloff's workload was already excessive, and adding a history course could hurt the music program. Barbara Snead, the president of the King Philip Music Association, said the move was not using Wolloff's talents properly. "No offense to our current music teacher, but he's not a highly qualified history teacher," she said. "He's a highly qualified teacher of art." According to Snead, Wolloff deals with more students than the typical teacher. "In the music program, there are 192 students — History will add 30 students," she said. "The average …

I sincerely hope the district acts on Dr. Gilson's recommendations. She looked at how various school districts staff their music departments, her study revealed KP is woefully understaffed. To say the district gets a screaming deal from Mr. Wolloff, might be THE understatement of 2011 He puts in over a thousand extra hours a year, much of which is unpaid, to give KP High award winning Symphony, …   more ›
