The Senate Judiciary Committee favorably reported Senate Bill 829 an Act relative to the protection of off duty firefighters and emergency medical technicians out of committee at a public hearing held May 7. Lead sponsor, Senator Jim Timilty (D) Walpole, Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety, filed this bill along with members of the House of Representatives: Chairman Louis L. Kafka (D) Stoughton, Daniel B. Winslow (R) Norfolk, and Aaron Vega (D) Holyoke. The 2013 town and state primary elections are taking place today in Wrentham, and town clerk Carol Mollica said turnout is, so far, fairly low. “It’s been kind of slow, not to bad,” she said. As of noon., there were 1160 ballots with approximately 578 voters, which is about 7.5 percent of the town’s eligible voters. She added it’s a pretty accurate estimation at this point, since most residents have voted in both elections. “Just about everyone took two ballots, I think only two people so far didn’t,” she said. “I think it’s pretty close.” This year, Geroge Smith has thrown his hat in the ring again against either Gail Pratt or Joseph Botaish. State Rep. Daniel Winslow of Norfolk was the choice in Saturday's GOP straw poll in Danvers. The state Republican group gave Winslow, 79 votes, allowing him to defeat Cohasset businessman Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy Seal, 59, and former US Attorney General Michael Sullivan, 55 “It’s really just a chance to meet activists,” said Winslow in the Boston Herald. “I was really pleased to be able to connect with so many activists and that our message can resonate.” The three candidates are in a sprint to get votes for the U.S. Senate primary April 30.

With local Republicans still scrambling to find someone to run in the race for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary of State, we do have some other contenders who have jumped into the fray. State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk) is expected to announce Tuesday on whether he will be the running for the United States Senate, according to a report in the Sun Chronicle. Winslow told the Associated Press that he has been urged by supporters to run for the seat previous held by John Kerry. Winslow are announce that Norfolk, Plainville and Wrentham have each been awarded $4,625 in grant funding through the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program for the 2013 fiscal year. Sen. Scott Brown has endorsed State Rep. Dan Winslow's power outage rebate bill.
State Rep. Daniel Winslow (R-Norfolk) is getting attention for a bill he proposed that would require utility companies to provide rebates for long power outages. Winslow said he proposed the bill after the outages caused by Tropical Storm Irene. "It would require the utilities to rebate customers two days for every one day where they went more than eight hours without power," he said. "The utilities are a monopoly — they're not subject to competitive pressures." He said this bill would incentivize companies to aggressively trim tree limbs and upgrade their power stations.
