King Philip's Layman Earns Gold for USA Basketball Team

Wrentham's Jake Layman and his U18 men's basketball teammates won the gold medal with a win over Brazil in the championship game.

  Former King Philip High standout Jake Layman can now add gold medal winner to his resume. His U18 United States men's basketball team defeated Brazil, 81-56, in the FIBA Americas U18 Championship gold medal game, in Brazil, Wednesday.  Layman, who is headed to the University of Maryland, came off the bench in all five wins, scored 38 points, including going 6 for 15 from three-point land for a 7.6 points average. He also add 20 rebounds The USA team, which averaged 97.2 points a game during the championship while winning its five contests by an average of 38.6 points a game, received scoring from 11 of its 12 players. Wrentham's Layman Shoots USA Basketball to Win over Mexico

Former King Philip star Jake Layman will be playing for the USA 18 basketball team today against Brazil.

Led by former King Philip standout Jake Layman’s game high 18-points, the USA’s Men’s U18 Team won its second game in as many days, routing Mexico 110-59 in preliminary play of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men on Sunday afternoon in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. The Wrentham native was 3 for 5 in three-point attempts. "Yeah, I felt good shooting," said Layman. "They were leaving me open so I took the shots and I was putting them in today. In their second outing in the tournament, Team USA played much better. “I thought we came with really good energy. King Philip's Layman Earns Spot on USA Basketball Team

Former King Philip High standout Jake Layman is playing with the USA Basketball U18 team after making the 12-men squad.

  Before he gets to the University of Maryland in the fall, former King Philip boys' basketball standout Jake Layman is playing for the USA 18-under basketball team, coached by the University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan. Layman made the 12-man team this week and is playing with the national team in Brazil from June 16-20 at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. "I'm blessed to be here," said Layman in a video interview on the USA Basketball website. "I was surprised when I got the invite." Layman had been training with the team in Colorado Springs at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
