2013 Season Preview: Wheaton College Baseball

Lyons focused on NEWMAC championship run.

Despite being ranked preseason favorites in two national polls and appearing in the NCAA Division III College World Series last season, the focus of the Wheaton College baseball team remains the same as the Lyons head into their 2013 campaign.   "Our goals are always to take care of today, try to get better and try to continue progressing throughout the year," said head coach Eric Podbelski who is in his 17th year at the helm. "Certainly a goal of ours is to win our NEWMAC regular season championship so that we have a chance to host the NEWMAC Tournament and win our NEWMAC Tournament. That's a big goal for us because that is the only guaranteed way to get into the NCAA Tournament and then you just keep resetting your goals from there." …

Going to the Movies Baseball Style

Top 10 baseball movies of all time are listed. What are your favorite baseball movies of all time?

With another baseball season under way, it's time to go to the movies with our bats and gloves. Wrentham Cal Ripken Team Beats Falmouth, 12-7

Team will play Revere tonight.

Wrentham used a six-run second and a five-run fifth inning to beat a very good Falmouth team Tuesday night 12-7 in the Massachusetts Cal Ripken 11 year old State Championship Tournament.  Falmouth (1-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, stringing together four consecutive one-out hits in the first inning.   Wrentham (2-0) got a run in the first, and exploded for six runs in the pivotal second inning when Will Weir singled in two runs and Colin Cooke and Riley Lucas followed with RBI singles to take a 7-3 lead.  Falmouth immediately responded with a three-run third inning to draw within 7-6 before Will Weir stopped a fourth-inning rally cold, striking out two batters with runners at second and third.  Wrentham put the game away in the fifth…

Your Pick-Up Baseball Guide

As the official baseball season begins both at Fenway and at local athletic fields in your town, why not bring back the good ol’ pick-up baseball?

When he was a child, my father spent his summer days playing pick-up baseball with the neighborhood kids. “Back then, the phrase youth sports didn’t really exist,” he recently told me. “It was called playing outdoors, making friends and having fun.”  As the official baseball season begins both at Fenway and at local athletic fields in your town, why not bring back the good ol’ pick-up baseball?  Here’s a few ways to get it started: Find a field. It can be in your back yard, a local park or you could call your Parks and Recreation Department to find out if and when a field in available in town. In years past, Bellingham charged $100 for two months of weekly baseball. If you get 10 families to join it, you’re talking just $10 each. Gather …
