Area Reactions To The Alcohol Sales Tax Repeal
The new initiative to end sales tax on alcoholic beverages, question 1 on the ballot, passed in the state by four percent.
Ballot question 1 passed and the sales tax on alcohol has been repealed, but it was something of a close call. According to Massachusetts Election 2010.com, the initiative passed by only 4 percent and will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2011. The initiative to put sales tax on alcohol was originally approved in Aug. of 2009 and ever since, many liquor stores have seen many of their customers either go to New Hampshire or simply buy cheap and low-quality brands.Many store-owners in the state said they had to reduce their staff because they were losing so much business, but there was a good deal of opposition to the repeal as well.
