Ravens, Pats will square off in AFC Championship Game.
The playoffs have not been kind to offense-based teams this year. The regular season was dominated by three teams that play offense well, but defense poorly: the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints and the New England Patriots. All three entered the playoffs with high seeds. Only the Patriots remain. That's the primary reason for the Pats to be nervous about their game against the Ravens — that lingering sense that, even in this year of record-setting offense, defense will still win the day. There are some positive signs for the Pats, though. They're coming off their utter domination of the Denver Broncos, while the Ravens struggled mightily against the Houston Texans. The Ravens had trouble with both the Texans offensive and …

The Patriots get set to play a talented but foundering Eagles team.
This week, the New England Patriots will face their toughest test remaining this season: the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have had their share of problems this year, but it hasn't been for lack of talent. The team has given away the ball at inopportune times and collapsed in the fourth quarter in multiple games. Here are things to watch this afternoon: Is the pass rush for real? The Patriots have made two successive quarterbacks look uncomfortable: Mark Sanchez of the Jets and Tyler Palko of the Chiefs. Their defensive line has finally been able to produce pressure, even with (or perhaps because of) the release of Albert Haynesworth. For the team to continue its defensive improvement, Andre Carter must have another big day. The Eagles, …

Patriots look to rebound after last week's Steelers loss.
The New England Patriots, coming off a bad loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, will host the New York Giants today at 4:15pm. Here's some things to watch at today's game: The defensive backfield can't be this bad — can it? The Pats secondary looked positively hapless against the Steelers. Ben Roethlisberger was able to complete passes at will, and this kept Brady off the field. The poor performance called the decision to release cornerback Leigh Bodden into question. Put simply, if this team's defense is as bad as they performed last Sunday, this team isn't going anywhere. The offense cannot be called upon to score on every possession. Eli Manning is a hot-and-cold quarterback, but he has a good corps of wide receivers (even with …

The Patriots face off against the Dallas Cowboys today at 4:15pm.
The New England Patriots are set to take on the up-and-down Dallas Cowboys this afternoon. Despite their struggles, the Cowboys look to be a tough test for this Pats team, so here are things to look out for. Will the defense continue its positive momentum? The much-maligned Patriots defense looked much better against the Jets last week. The question is, though, was that actual improvement or a reflection on the quality of their opposition? The Jets, after all, were reeling. Their gameplan was ridiculously conservative, and they did start to have success when they went to the pass late. The Cowboys present a bigger challenge. Tony Romo is talented (if mistake-prone) and he has very good receivers in Miles Austin and Dez Bryant. If the Pats …

Patriots first team looks dangerous in 31-14 win over Buccaneers.
The Patriots starters showed little signs of rust Thursday night in a 31-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Here are some quick thoughts on the game: MVP: Andre Carter, defensive end. One of the Pats' newest defensive-line acquisitions looked like a force last night, putting a lot of pressure on Tampa Bay quarterbacks. Third-year quarterback Josh Freeman was harried throughout his time under center, and Carter was a big part of that. This Pats defense could hardly have performed better against the Tampa Bay starters. Offensive MVP: Tom Brady, quarterback. Brady wasn't perfect, but he was good enough to shred the Tampa Bay defense — especially in the early going. His first two drives were near-perfect, ending in touchdown passes to Aaron…

Patriots travel to Tampa Bay for their second preseason game.
The New England Patriots will play their second preseason contest tonight in Tampa Bay, facing off against the Buccaneers. Last week, we took a look at the things to watch for in the Jacksonville game, and we wrapped up the game here. So, what are the emerging storylines for tonight's contest? 1. How much will we see of Brady and company? One of the more impressive things about last week's 47-12 win was the fact that very few starters were involved. The team's second- and third-stringers showed little rust after the long layoff. What about the starters? Have Tom Brady and Chad Ochocinco built a rapport yet? Will the new secondary (Devin McCourty and Leigh Bodden) mesh? Is BenJarvus Green-Ellis still the bruising back we remember? 2. Can …
