Freshman Chandler Ross of Wrentham stands out in net for the Bridgewater State women's lacrosse team.
Led by tournament MVP Taylor Clancy (Braintree), the Bridgewater State University Bears captured the inaugural Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Lacrosse Tournament championship as the top-seeded Bears downed second-seeded Westfield State University, 13-10, on Saturday afternoon at Swenson Field. BSU netminder Chandler Ross (Wrentham) turned aside six shots to record her 13th win of the season. Olivia Galvin (Mashpee) led the Bears' defensive effort with five caused turnovers. In the regular season, Ross, a freshman, made 15 starts, stopping 88 shots in 226 attempts for the Bears.

Meghan Rico, a former standout at King Philip High School, is a freshman pitcher at George Washington University.
Former King Philip High standout Meg Rico and her George Washington University softball teammates will be playing Saint Louis University today in the Atlantic-10 Championship at UMass-Amherst at 10 a.m. On the season, the freshman pitcher is 13-10 with a 3.06 earned run average in 31 appearances, 24 starts. Rico has struckout 133 batters, walked 126 and opponents are hitting .198 against her. George Washington softball team earned the No. 4 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship. If they beat St. Louis, they will move on to play No. 1 seed St. Joseph's Thursday at noon. Despite a strong first half, the Warriors fell 15-8 to Mansfield.
Though a quarter and a half of play and tied 5-5, it appeared the Mansfield Hornets and King Philip Warriors were in for a shootout. The Hornets, however, cracked down on defense and pulled away for a 15-8 win over the Warriors. With the loss, the Warriors fall to 3-10. Two quick goals from Conor Finerty and Mike Barressi put the Hornets up 2-0 early in the first quarter but the Warriors would use possession to get the lead by the end of the quarter. Chris White started things for King Philip with a 10 yard shot followed by a wraparound wide angle goal by Jack Riley to tie the game 2-2 about halfway through the quarter. UPDATE (Saturday, 8 p.m.) - The Patriots were busy on Day 3 of the NFL Draft, selecting TCU wide receiver Josh Boyce in the fourth round and adding two more defensive players in the seventh round Saturday. The Pats also traded a seventh round (229th overall) and running back/returner/US Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for running back LeGarrette Blount. Tampa Bay later traded that pick to the Minnesota Vikings, who selected defensive tackle Everett Dawkins. With the 226th overall pick in the draft, the Patriots chose Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan. Instead, Andruzzi spoke passionately about his adopted city, Boston and showed all watching from Radio City and around the country on ESPN that Boston remains Strong in the aftermath of the attacks on the Marathon. The 21st annual Wrentham Lions Club Fishing Derby will be held Saturday.
The Wrentham Lions Club is holding their 21st annual Fishing Derby on Saturday April 27, at Trout Pond behind the Wrentham Department of Public Works off Taunton Street, rain or shine. This event is for kids up to the age of 18, and is free. This event starts at 7 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. when there is the awards ceremony and a raffle. Awards will be for the single largest trout caught in three age categories plus other prizes. There will be free hot dogs and drinks available on a first come first served basis starting at 10:30 a.m. until they are out. A sophomore red-shirt tight-end, Norfolk's Brandon Howard caught a touchdown pass in the UMass-Amherst football team's spring game. He was also selected as one of four players to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.
Former King Philip High standout Brandon Howard wore the name of Lingzi Lui, the Boston University student who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombing, on the back of his jersey for the University of Massachusetts football team in their annual spring game Saturday in Amherst. The UMass coaching staff selected four players to wear the names of the victims on their jersey. Dorcester native Stanley Andre, a defensive lineman, wore the name of Martin Richard, who was from his hometown, while Kylsmann Andre had Krystie Campbell's name on his jersey. The Boston Red Sox will play doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals, Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. The second game was supposed to be played Friday night, but was postponed while the city was in lockdown mode as a manhunt for the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings ensued.
