Fuel Assistance Program Sees Higher Demand

A look at the fuel assistance program in town.

Tough economic times have led to more people seeking fuel assistance funds, according to those who run the program.

Fran Padula, the senior center's outreach coordinator and the person who administers the "Self Help Fuel Assistance Program" for Wrentham, said many people have signed up for aid.

"It's been really popular," she said. "These things are popular all over now, as people are looking for something to give them some help."

She said the program can help people get through the harsh winter months.

"The program works to keep people from falling through the cracks," she said. "If they qualify, we go through their fuel company to get them credit on their bills."

Padula said the average amount of assistance given is about $600.

"Last year, it was about $800," she said. "We don't really know until November how much will be given out."

According to Padula, those interested in signing up through the program do so through the town's senior center.

"We do it by appointment," she said. "I send them a checklist of things we need. It's a little tedious, but the process is pretty good."

She said the process is easier for those who have already received assistance from the program.
