Wrapup: Patriots, Brady Look Explosive Against Dolphins

Patriots take Monday night contest against Miami, 38-24.

The New England Patriots offense looked dominant in a 38-24 win over an improved Miami Dolphin team.

Here are a few quick thoughts on the game:

MVP: Tom Brady, quarterback

As if there was any doubt.

Brady continued to write himself into the record book. Last night, he threw for more than 500 yards for the first time in his career (and got the fifth-highest single-game yardage total in NFL history), moved into sole possession of 10th in career touchdowns thrown and tied the NFL record for longest pass.

Brady looked untouchable early in the game, and directed his team to scoring drives right when it looked like the Dolphins would get back in the contest. He adjusted to the Miami blitz and kept the offense running efficiently.

Could you ask anything else of him?

Co-MVP: Nate Solder, offensive tackle

Solder manhandled Miami's Cameron Wake throughout the game, displaying good power and technique. For a rookie to step into an opening game (especially after a lockout-shortened offseason) and perform against the sixth-ranked defense in the league is amazing.

Let's hope Solder continues to perform as well. If he does, the line will be solid for years to come.

Mixed results: Chad Ochocinco, wide receiver

Ocho was the forgotten man on the offense for much of the night. He had a catch for 14 yards, was the subject of some uncalled defensive pass interference and was targeted on a Brady misfire.

The lack of production could partly be because of the game plan — the Dolphins were allowing Brady to pass to his tight ends at will.

Still, one would like to see more progress from the talented wideout.

Encouraging signs: Defensive line

The defensive line looked much-improved from last year. Chad Henne was able to complete passes, but he took some brutal punishment as a result, and the line was able to force some incompletions late.

Albert Haynesworth looked like he had returned to his Titans form, coming off double teams to make plays. The Pats might finally have a pass rush.

Needs improvement: The secondary

The Pats secondary was able to make plays, but was sporadic overall. They allowed Henne to pass for 416 yards and move the ball down the field quickly.

The defensive backfield might be a lingering headache this year.
