KP Volleyball Team Wins Final Regular Season Contest

King Philip defeats Attleboro in three sets 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16.

Not only was it the last regular match of the season prior to the beginning of the
Hockomock League Championships, it was also senior night in Wrentham.

The King Philip volleyball team was not about to let a one-win Attleboro team come into their gym and walk away with a victory on their special night.

The Warriors came out with vengeance and scored the first six points of the first
set that eventually led to a three-set win (25-16, 25-21 and 25-16) over the
Bombardiers.  Despite coming out with the first six points of the evening, it could have been a lot worse for Attleboro.

Junior Julie Farabough (six kills and two blocks) was set up time and time again
for the kill, but each time, the middle hitter sent the ball sailing too far.

“Julie was getting the ball behind her head and was not transitioning it far enough,” King Philip Coach Cindy Souza said. “The girls worked it out and got the kills going, and grabbed the win to improve to 7-12.”

After KP opened the game on a six-point run, Attleboro put together a run of their own to cut into the lead (6-4) before the home team put together a couple more six-point runs to put the first set away.

With the Warriors coming out strong, Attleboro Coach Matt Gousie had to
call an early timeout to settle his girls down.

"It’s the last regular-season game of what’s been a long season,” the Attleboro coach said. “The girls came out flat, but I think it was more of King Philip coming
out with excitement on senior night. They came out with a lot of energy and went up 6-0, making it tough to come back especially with the way passed tonight.”

While Gousie thought the slow start was due to the KP excitement, the Warrior’s coach thought the excitement of the night got the better of her squad in the early goings.

“Actually, we played a little flat; they weren’t as intense and didn’t play the regular tempo that they usually play at,” Souza said. “I don’t know if the excitement of the night with their parents being here got them, but they definitely played at a slower pace.”

Attleboro seemed to be more focused in the second set, tying the contest on six different occasions, the last being at 16. KP’s Maslin Mellick (five kills, two aces and five blocks) then proceeded to real off six straight points to put the Warriors on the verge of the second set win at 22-16. The Bombardiers battled back, but KP eventually took its second straight set. KP tri-captain Jodi Cullity (five service
aces, 15 digs and one set assist) also served six straight points, including three aces in the second set.

The Warriors will host Foxborough on Thursday in the Hockomock League Championship series. King Philip seniors included Cullity, Rebecca
Gemelli (three aces and 18 set assists), Amanda Geuss (two aces and six set assists),  Katie McEachern (two kills, one block, one ace), Mellick, Casey Norris (three kills, three aces and seven digs) and Erika O’Brien (four kills and one block). Coach Souza also acknowledged Attleboro seniors Kelsey Sheehan, Ashley Lameiras and Jenna Rodrigues.
