Perfect King Philip Girls' Softball Team Blanks Stoughton

Meghan Rico only allows one single against the Black Knights.

In the numbers’ game, the King Philip girls’ softball team is perfect.

With their 15-0 win at Stoughton Monday, the Warriors qualified for the tournament with a 10-0 record. The game was stopped after six innings because of the 15-run slaughter rule.

“That was No.1 and now we have some more work to do,” said KP head coach Jim Leonard of getting back to the postseason.

The next number for the Warriors is 0.00.

“Their No. 1 pitcher (Meghan Rico) and their No. 2 (Meg Carnase) haven’t given up an earned run, so that makes them 0.00,” said Stoughton head coach Janet Sullivan.

Rico toed the pitching rubber against the Black Knights and only allowed one hit, a leadoff single by Stoughton’s clean-up hitter Nicole Beaurgard to center field.

Rico started the game off as being unhittable, which is nothing new for the senior right hander, who already has three no-hitters and one perfect game this season. Rico struck out the first seven batters of the game and finished with 13.

“When they got the hit, it took a little bit of pressure off of her,” said Leonard. “She’s really in command of all of her pitches.”

“(Rico) is a very good pitcher. There are reasons why they are undefeated and the defending state champions,” added Sullivan.

The Warriors will be traveling to Attleboro today before hosting Oliver Ames Wednesday. Both games will be 3:30 p.m. start.

With the tournament clinched and their pitching staff on fire, KP is focusing on other part of their game.

“We need a little more discipline on the bases,” said Leonard. “We’re getting there.”

After getting a run in the first inning, the Warriors did all of their damage from the third to the sixth inning, scoring two, four, three and three runs.

Clean-up hitter Anna Kelley, shortstop Jen Robillard, Olivia Godin and Allyssa Siegmann were each on base four times, while Meg Carnase was on base three times and drove in a pair of runs. Tori Constantin had a double and a triple.

Ricco added a homer and a single for the Warriors.

Stoughton got a strong effort from pitcher Jessica Olans, back-up catcher Bailey Olsen and third baseman Nicole Barton.

With the loss, the Black Knights dropped to 4-7 on the season, but they still are in contention for a state tournament berth of their own.

“We’re still in it,” said Sullivan. “We have two more games this week.”

The Black Knights will host Attleboro Wednesday and will travel to North Attleboro Friday.
