Oliver Ames Volleyball Defeats King Philip in 4 Sets

Loss snaps Warriors three-game winning streak.

With a loss at the hands of Oliver Ames in four sets, the King Philip volleyball team fell to 5-7 on the year and, with only seven games remaining, the Warriors are still in the hunt for a tournament berth.

KP opened the night with a hard-fought 25-20 win, but fell in the next three sets 14-25, 18-25 and 19-25 to hand the victory over to the visiting Tigers.

“I thought that we were a much the more balanced team tonight,” Warrior coach Cindy Souza said. “We played better defensively, but unfortunately we made a lot of unforced errors and had some net violations that hurt us. This win was in our reach, we just didn’t execute enough to get it.”

Julie Farabaugh lead the team in the loss with seven kills and two blocks, while Miranda Murphy had three kills, two blocks, three aces and five digs.
Maslin Mellick contributed two kills, one block and three aces and Ericka O’Brien had three kills. Casey Norris had seven kills, two aces and 18 digs, despite leaving the second set for a time with a jammed thumb. Tri-Captain Jodi Cullity had 16 digs in a defensive effort for the Warriors.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak the Warriors had going on the court. KP will get right back in action tonight as they travel to take on Braintree.

“There is still time to get to .500 and get into the tournament,” Souza said. “We had our streak snapped tonight, but I’m hoping to start a new streak when we go to Braintree tomorrow.”

King Philip had defeated Stoughton 3-2 earlier in the week for their third straight victory. The two teams traded wins throughout the evening before the Warriors secured the win. Stoughton took the first and third sets (24-26 and 19-25), while KP grabbed the second and fourth set (25-13 and 25-22) before taking the final set 15-11.

Norris lead the team with 12 kills, two aces and 11 digs; Mellick had seven kills, three aces and seven blocks; Katie McEachern had five kills, three aces and 18 digs; Murphy had two kills aces and eight straight service points and Farabaugh had three kills and three blocks.
