North Attleboro Runs Past King Philip Girls 82-50

The visitors went on a 23-2 run, including 17 unanswered points to grab the Hockomock League victory.

The King Philip girls held a 6-3 lead early in the first quarter, but it would be their only lead of this game as North Attleboro went on a 17-0 run, including 12 straight to close out the first quarter up 17-6.

The 17 first quarter points would be the Red Rocketeers lowest quarter as they rolled over the Warriors in Wrentham, 82-50.

“We play up-tempo and can score a lot of points. This particular game, they were pressing, giving us some fast breaks and probably the reason we scored so many points,” North coach John Del Bonis said. “I thought that we came out a little lethargic, and when we started pressing, it picked us up and gave us the energy.”

If North had come right after the Warriors what might the score be? First year KP Coach Megan Barry is not all that concerned and during the half told the team things would be OK despite trailing 41-11 after two quarters of play

“The biggest thing we’re working on this season is building confidence as individuals on a team,” the coach said. “It’s a new coach bringing in a new system, and there are a lot of things that come with that. In the second half, we started believing in it and our confidence grew and [we] started scoring points.”

With that renewed confidence in their game, the Warriors came out strong in the third quarter and not only outscored North by three, but also doubled their entire first-half output. While the 23 points was a good sign, KP still found itself down by 27 with only one quarter of basketball remaining.

“North is a very good team, and while we were able to get the ball over half court
fine, we were not hitting our shots,” Barry said. “That’s going to happen; you’re not going to hit every shot you take, but as our confidence grew shots started going in.”

The third-quarter scoring barrage was led by senior Ashley Johnson, who had all of her game-high 11 points, including three treys, in the quarter. Jenna
Liljeberg aided the cause with six of her 10 in the quarter.

North Attleboro was lead by a trio of scorers: Meg Ronaghan was the game’s high scorer with 23 points (14 coming in the second half), while Jill Cullen knocked down 19 and Alison McHugh added 15 in the win.

The win improves North to 5-1 and King Philip falls to 3-5.
