North Attleboro No Match For King Philip Basketball

Warriors use defense to create offense and run all over the Red Rocketeers, 63-38.

On paper, it looked like a total mismatch: one-win North Attleboro visiting 12-win King Philip on senior night.

When all was said and done, the final outcome was what everyone expected it to be, as the Warriors took it to the Red Rocketeers, 63-38, in a Hockomock League battle.

Prior to the game, the six seniors (Mike Schmidt, Jake Layman, Christian Fair, Connor Smith, John Mullane and Mike Viola) were introduced with their parents, but once the game started, it was down to business. King Philip’s defense was stifling as North Attleboro was never able to really get anything going as the Warrior’s held the visitors to under 10 points in each of the first three quarters.

“That’s the way that we were playing defense at the beginning of the year [shutting down the opposition’s passing lanes] and we got away from it there for about five or six games,” King Philip coach Sean McInnis said. “Tonight, we were starting to get that better rotation, making sure Jake’s in the paint.”

With the King Philip defense not allowing the Red Rocketeers to get good looks at the basket, the Warriors were able to push the ball up court and find the open man. They built a nine point lead (18-9) through the first quarter and a 35-16 lead at half.

Although KP had 35 points at the intermission, it was Layman would lead the way. The senior not only outscored the entire North Attleboro team by three points in the second quarter, but when the teams headed to the locker room at the half the Red Rocketeers had 16 total points, while Layman notched 17 of his game-high 21.

“I think that Jake only missed one shot that entire first half and was getting good shot selection,” the coach said. “The majority of his points came in that half, but that was more going into the second half and getting everyone else involved. Tonight was about the six seniors.”

Despite starting late because of the freshman game going into overtime, the varsity contest moved along at relatively quick pace with up and down the floor action.

Following a jump shot knocked down by North’s Harrison Carmichael, the home team scored the final five points of the half and added the first six of the third quarter to go up by 15 points.

As though it was planned, the KP seniors were dominant on the scoreboard in the NA win. Layman led all scorers, while fellow seniors Mullane (nine-points), Smith (eight) and Schmidt (seven) followed. Viola and Fair added six and four points respectively. North was paced by Ryan Foster (seven points), Sean Peters and Paul Norris each with six.
