Norfolk American Legion Baseball Defeats Canton

The legion team won, 5-2, Sunday night.

Norfolk Post 335 defeated Canton Sunday night in a legion baseball game played at Freeman-Centennial Field in Norfolk. The final was 5-2.

The win represents the first for Norfolk against three losses. Nate Leonard (Wrentham/KPHS) pitched a solid five innings to gain the win, yielding only five hits and two runs, while striking out two.

"After not pitching a lot of innings this spring at King Philip, Nate showed that maybe he should have as he really was in control of his pitches out there," said Coach Lagos. "He is a quality pitcher and should be successful at the next level."

Norfolk jumped on the board early, as three of Wrentham's finest went into offensive mode. Alex Lagos (Millis HS) walked, Tyler Campo (Xavarian HS) singled and Joey Presti (Catholic Memorial HS) plated both of them with a double. A single by Nick Ahearn (Norfolk/Xavarian HS) scored Presti and Norfolk lead after one 3-0.

Leonard pitched through five, with his only real problems coming in the third where Canton scored two runs on three hits and a walk. Leonard managed to pitch his way out of the inning, leaving two runners on base.

"Nate really bore down there, and the defense did the job again to get us out of that inning," said Coach Lagos. "Our defense has been doing the job, as we have already turned seven double plays in the first four games."

Norfolk scored its final two runs in the sixth, allowing Brian Crafton (Norfolk/KPHS) to pitch a strong sixth and Jack Ricci (Wrentham/Mount St Charles) closed it out for the save in the seventh.

The next home game at Freeman-Centennial Field for Post 335 will be Tuesday at 5:45pm against Norwood.
