Mother Nature Causing Problems For KP Athletics

Large amounts of snow have forced high schools to adjust their schedules on a regular basis this winter.

Living in New England, one knows that Mother Nature is always going to wreck havoc amongst the natives throughout the calendar year.

This winter, the old gal has already dumped record-breaking amounts of snow on our doorsteps, causing local high school athletic directors to go scurrying to reschedule those contests cancelled.

With the numerous number of sports on many levels that each high school houses, it’s a wonder that area athletic directors have any hair left following this winter season.

“It has definitely been a challenge so far,” King Philip Athletic Director Steve Schairer said. “But I’m not losing my hair over it – it is going gray though.”

According to Schairer, although snow has postponed a good number of games, it’s still early enough in the season to get these contests rescheduled without a major issue.

“Right now it’s not that critical, but ask me that in a couple of weeks when the seasons are winding down and the availability is becoming slimmer - then it’ll be tough,” the AD said. “When there is a cancellation, the league bylaws state you are to play the contest on the next available date.”

While that may sound easy, in most cases it's not. You’re looking at two teams' schedules, and trying to find a date that satisfies both parties.

“As an AD, there’s no issue with me; it’s the coaches that have the issues,” Schairer said. “They already have things set up and don’t want to try to have too many games in a row, but if they don’t do it now, they’ll have no choice down the road.”

With the beginning of February just around the corner, the end of the winter seasons will commence in less than three short weeks. With that said, area athletic directors and coaches will be hoping and praying that Mother Nature has unleashed enough of the white fluffy stuff already, so that they can go about their business and play the games at hand – the ones currently scheduled.
