Mansfield Volleyball sweep King Philip

Julie Farabaugh had 10 blocks and 4 kills but it was not enough to overcome the Hornets.

For as good of a night of volleyball as it was for the Mansfield Hornets, it was just as rough for the King Philip Warriors. Despite some good serves from Bridget Murray and a solid defensive performance, the Warriors fell to the Hornets in 3 sets 25-10, 25-14, and 25-10.

After going down in the first set by 15, the Warriors fought back to keep the score tight early in the second set. That was all chance after Julie Campbell hit 3 Aces in a row to turn a 6-4 game in favor of the Hornets into a 9-4 game.

Led by Michelle Ganter-Fichera’s 9 kills and 5 blocks, the Hornets never looked back as good blocking and plenty of kills gave them a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead. King Philip didn’t make things better as they struggled to maintain the passing game.

“We had a tough passing night so we just fell a little bit behind. Dug ourselves into a hole in that second game,” said King Philip Coach Cynthia Souza.

Mansfield continued to work together in the final set.  Ending the game with a 10-5 run, the Hornets put away the Warriors in style to win the match and the set 25-10.

“The past couple games they’ve really gelled and come together and I think that even when we’re hitting some walls they’ve done a really good job of staying together and positive,” said Hornets Coach Melissa Suriani.

Despite the losing effort, the Warriors did show some bright spots. Julie Farabaugh had 10 blocks with 4 kills. Brigid Murray had 9 set assists with 5 digs. Jodi Cullity had 17 digs and 2 kills.

On the other side of the net was a successful team effort. Working together, the Hornets are seeing improvements in each other as individuals and as a team

“My big emphasis throughout the season has been really hitting the floor and lots of communication and I’m really starting to see that,” said Suriani.

The win improves Mansfield record to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in league play. The Warriors are 5-10 overall and 3-9 in league play.

The Warriors’ next match will be at North Attleboro High School on October 18. Match time is set for 4:45 p.m. The Hornets will host Attleboro High School on October 21 at 4:45 p.m.
