Late Goal Costs KP Girls Hockey a Win

A goal with less than nine seconds to play forces KP to settle for a 2-2 tie against Marshfield.

If not for one play with 8.9 seconds left in the game, the King Philip Warriors would have been celebrating a well-fought victory over the Marshfield Rams. Going into the third period with a 2-0 lead, the Warriors looked liked they were only 15 minutes away from a win over the Rams.

“I think everyone had a good game the first two periods,” KP head coach Paul Lyons said. “The third period collapsed if you ask me.”

A win was not meant to be, as a last second goal from the Rams forced the Warriors to settle for a 2-2 tie.

What almost looked like a scoreless first period was the opposite, with Danielle Hamilton got the Warriors on the board with a goal off an one on one at 14:01 of the first period. Haley Anchukaitis and Amanda Geuss were credited with the assists.

“She’s [Hamilton] got about 10 of those goals. She’s good from coast to cost,” said Lyons.

The Rams responded in the second period with shot after shot on KP goalie Alyssa Siegmann. The senior goalie stopped 13 of 13 shots alone in the second period while ending the day with 26 saves on 28 shots on goal.

Sticking with the theme of late period goals for the Warriors was Olivia Florence, who scored off a rebound to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead at 13:05 of the second period. Anchukaitis earned her second assist on the score.

Sloppy play towards the end of the third period gave the Rams a chance to make it a game again after a shot from Kaitlyn Lema got past Siegmann’s glove side to cut the lead in half with 5:54 left to play in the game.

Pulling the goalie for the extra attacker with 1:03 left in the game and down by one, the Rams took away the lead with less than nine seconds to go when Angela Dunn got the puck off the boards and drew Siegmann out of her goal and found Erin Shea for the tying goal.

“The puck shouldn’t have ever even been there — that should have been kept along the boards and should of never went in front of her,” Lyons said,  “She [Siegmann] did everything that she could”

The tie gives King Philip a record of 3-8-2.

The Warriors return to the ice for a Saturday night showdown against Canton on February 4 at 3:10pm at the Foxboro Sports Center.
