KP Wrestling Defeats Sharon

King Philip takes the match, 59-6.

The Sharon High School varsity wrestling team struggled in its Hockomock League opener, dropping the decision, 59-6, to the visiting King Philip Warriors on Wednesday night.

The Eagles were wrestling short-handed, as the team was without its full complement of varsity members.

"Definitely not the start (we wanted)," said Anthony Lucie, the Eagles' 10th year head coach.

There were a few bright spots for Sharon, including freshman Joe Haviland (103 pounds) and senior captain Eli Schwarzschild (126).

"He's not intimated, which we like, and he goes after moves," Lucie said about Haviland. "He's only been wrestling for two weeks, but we see some promise in him as a freshman."

Schwarzschild, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury, competed in his first varsity match of the season against King Philip, and earned a pinfall victory.

The Warriors were very impressive in the win, picking up nine pinfalls, including four that took less than one minute to occur.

"King Philip is an experienced team, they returned a lot of their wrestlers," explained Lucie.  "They'll be fighting for second or third place (in the Hockomock League) this year."

King Philip will be at Medford on Saturday morning at 8 a.m and then return to Hockomock action when they host Franklin on Monday night at 7 p.m.
