KP Girls Tennis Team Wins Again, Defeats Franklin

Despite having two newcomers in the mix, the KP Warriors were still able to grab a 4-1 win over Franklin.

Coming into their match with neighboring Franklin, King Philip was faced with a shortage of starters.

Two of the Warriors starting seven girls tennis players were sidelined and Coach Bob Goldberg was forced to do some last minute shuffling of players. Luckily, the veteran coach made all the right moves, and the Warriors were able to walk off the court with a 4-1 win.

Missing his second singles player as well as one half of his second doubles team, Goldberg slid Jill Proto into the second singles slot up from her usual third singles position and inserted Emily Delaney into the second doubles slot to play along side of Jenn Bullock.  Freshman Rachel Palumbo, who had only seen varsity action on the doubles circuit, got to round out the singles slate, playing in Proto’s spot.

Lauren Trudeau and Proto playing the top two singles positions took care of business rather quickly dispatching of their opponents in two sets.  Trudeau ousted Andrea Constantine (6-2, 6-0), while Proto won (6-1, 6-1).

Palumbo, playing in her first varsity singles match, took out her opponent Kristen Moore in two sets as well, but not before a rough start. The freshman won the first set 7-5 before grabbing the second set 6-2.

“Rachel did a wonderful job today,” Goldberg said. “She’s a very teachable young lady, a pure athlete and only a freshman.”

The doubles tandem of Alex Embree and Jill Beers defeated Abby Bichler and Margo Rotari 6-0, 6-1. It was the tenth win of the season against only one loss for the first doubles team.  The twosome’s only loss came against Medfield earlier in the season.

“The first doubles team has solidified us this season,” the KP coach said. “We’ve been in a lot of 3-2 matches this year, and thanks to them we’ve won a good number of them.”

The Warriors' lone loss came in second doubles after a lengthy three-game set. Jenn Bullock and Delaney fell to the Panthers Ellie Mancini and Maddie Gordon 2-6, 7-6 (11-9) and 0-6.

KP will be back on the courts this afternoon at Ashland, before hosting Mansfield on Wednesday and Bridgewater-Raynham on Thursday.
