KP Girls Tennis Takes Loss Against Foxborough

In the inaugural Hockomock Cup for girls’ tennis, the Foxorough team defeated King Philip, 3-2, to win the school’s first ever Hockomock League title.

 Alana Prinos, Hallie Young, and Emma Prinos all won their matches in straight sets. Never looking challenged and in control for the entire match, Alana Prinos defeated KP’s Lauren Trudeau 6-0, 6-1 to remain undefeated this year.

In the second singles match, Foxborough’s Hallie Young defeated KP’s Casey Burks 6-2, 6-3.  In the 2nd set, Burkes was able to get the match to 4-3, but Young was too strong for the KP athlete.

The title was clinched in the third singles match, as Emma Prinos defeated Jill Proto 6-1, 6-0. The younger Prinos used her long ball game to get by Proto and lock up the title for Foxborough.

With the sweep in the singles matches, all three athletes end the regular season undefeated in league play. In addition, both Prinos sisters and Young won each league match year in straight sets.

“They got 3 great singles player that haven’t dropped a point all season and they did well again today. I thought we played well in 2nd singles but we just didn’t have enough,” said King Philip Coach Bob Goldberg.

In doubles actions, the team of Gretta Schaaf and Chelsea Miller fell to the team of Alex Embree and Jill Beers 1-6, 3-6. In the 2nd doubles match, the team of Megan Carter and Caroline Muise also fell 5-7, 4-6. Despite the losses, both teams showed improvement in the losing efforts.

“They’ve improved a lot. It just doesn’t show it on the scoreboard. I’ve seen a lot of improvement in both doubles teams,” said Foxboro coach Peter Prinos.

With the win, Foxboro has claimed their first tennis title in school history. For a school not known for tennis, it is a thrill for this team to be the first team to bring a league title home.

“I’m so proud of the team. I never thought that 4 years ago when I started we would be on the court right here with the Cup Championship,” said Senior captain Gretta Schaaf.

For coach Peter Prinos, the win ended what has been a very successful regular season for the first-year coach

“It was a very very memorable first season as coach. I’m just really proud of the girls. They really held up their end of the bargain,” said Prinos.
The MIAA is expected to announce the pairing on June 1st at 10am with the first matches happening on Friday June 3rd. 

King Philip is expected to compete in the team tennis tournament. Like Foxboro, they will also have representatives at Westwood High School's MIAA individual tournament Saturday morning. Their number one doubles team of Alex Embree and Jill Beers will face the sister team of Emily and Sara Curtis from The Ursuline Academy in the doubles finals. Match time is set for 11:30am.
