KP Girls Soccer Bounce Back With 1-0 Over Attleboro

Audrey Foxx got the lone goal in the 63rd minute to beat the Blue Bombardiers.

Despite being eliminated in the race to the state tournament, the King Philip Warriors are still trying to end the season with pride and on a high note.

With two games to go, the Warriors walked away with a 1-0 win in their second to last game against the Attleboro Blue Bombardiers.

Getting their chances, the Warriors struggled at times to get one past the Attleboro defense. Rachel Patten got past the Attleboro defense in the 13th minute, but Attleboro goalkeeper Elizabeth Clifton saved her shot.

The Warriors attacked again in the 16th minute, when Vanessa Newsome tried to go far post, but Clifton once again stopped the ball with a jumping catch.

It was finally Attleboro’s turn to attack in the 16th minute. With a well-placed ball into the keeper’s box, Brianna Laplume got her head on it, but KP keeper Jill Valente was able to stop the ball with a diving save to maintain a scoreless game.

KP continued to press forward for the rest of the first half, while Attleboro struggled to find opportunities. KP kept the Blue Bombardiers away from the net and away from scoring opportunities.

“We didn’t get a break. We couldn’t generate real good scoring opportunities in the first half,” said Attleboro coach Steve Santos.

The Warriors finally broke the tie in the 63rd minute, when Audrey Foxx scored off a free kick from 40 yards away to take a 1-0 lead.

“She hit it perfectly. It was a great shot,” said King Philip coach Greg Massotti.

The Blue Bombardiers had one more chance to tie the game in the 78th minute with a corner kick. With the ball booted into the keeper’s box, Valente quickly grabbed the ball to end the threat and wrap up a 1-0 victory for the Warriors.

In a game that saw few good chances, the Warriors took advantage of their best opportunity to win the game and put Attleboro away.

“One mistake costs you. We had that penalty and they got the free kick and that’s how they score their goal,” Santos said.

The win was a great improvement for a KP team that struggled against Foxborough in their previous game. The win was a much better display than their previous contest.

“We brought a little more energy than we did Friday. We played a little bit better with the ball,” said Massotti.

The Warriors improve to 5-8-3 with 15 points, while Attleboro is now 2-12-1 with 5 points.

King Philip will end the season on Oct. 30 at home with their Hockomock Crossover game. The opponent and time have yet to be arranged.

Attleboro will play one more game on the road against Sharon on Oct. 27 before coming home for their Hock Crossover the following Sunday. Like King Philip, the opponent and time has not been set.
