KP Boys Soccer Team Looking To Make It Four Years In A Row

Warriors hoping to advance into the Division 1 South State Tournament once again.

As of late, the King Philip Regional High School has become synonymous with the term champions.

Although the boys soccer team finished a respectable 1-3-4 last year, earning themselves an eight seed in the Division 1 South State Tournament, Kip Lewis’ team could not reach that elevated status.

Due to some drainage issues on the field, the Warriors were sent packing to BC High for their opening round contest instead of hosting a tournament game in front of their home town fans. BC High took the gift and the game 1-0.

King Philip has lost a lot from that squad and will be fielding a lot of young talent this fall, but the coach is not tossing in the towel.

“Without a doubt, it’s going to be an uphill battle,” Lewis said. “However, we’re still looking to win the Hockomock League Championship.”

In order to do so, the Warriors will have to overcome the likes of Franklin (the early pre-season favorite, according to the KP coach) and Attleboro, which looks to have improved.

Under the watchful eye of Lewis, the Warriors have qualified for the state tournament three of the last four years, and he’s hoping to get there once again this season.

Hoping to guide the Warriors into the Division 1 South State Tournament will be captains John Keys, Ian Pimental and Matt Hoostein. Keys, who played alongside his brother Matt last year, will play center back, while Hoostein will play defense and Pimental will be looked upon to put the ball in the opposition’s net.

“I’m hoping that Ian get us seven or eight goals this year and keep us on track to make the tournament for the fourth straight year,” the coach said.

Goalie Jim Murphy has shown the most improvement in the early part of the pre-season workouts. Lewis believes that the keeper will be able to keep the Warriors in a good number of contests if they can get a formidable defense to patrol the field in front of him.

“Jim could have seen some varsity action last year,” Lewis said. “I wanted him to get as much experience starting as he could, so we left in on the junior varsity team. Jim has worked very hard in the off season to bring his game to the next level.”

The Warriors will open the season on Wednesday, Sept. 7, when they travel to Bishop Feehan.
