KP Boys Soccer Team Drops Another Contest

Hopkinton shuts out the Warriors, 2-0.

In order to win soccer games, one must put the ball in the net more than the opposition.

Through the first nine games of the season King Philip has had a difficult time in doing this — their 2-4-3 record reflects that.

The Warriors had another rough time hosting Hopkinton and subsequently lost its fourth contest of the season, falling 2-0.

“We are not going to win games if we don’t put the ball in the back of the net, and you’re not going to win games when you put our goalkeeper under pressure inside our 10-yard line,” KP coach Kip Lewis said. “You give up a goal like we did, when it’s our fault and not something they did, it’s hard to take. I’d rather give up a goal on a corner kick.”

With the game scoreless in the first half, Hopkinton was deep within in the King Philip zone when the Warriors committed an error that allowed the visitors to grab the first goal of the game. The Hillers' Jack Hilger
got Hopkinton on the scoreboard at 17:29 mark, when his shot evaded KP keeper Jim Murphy for the eventual game winner.

"You just can’t play the ball back to the keeper when he’s under pressure. You’re just putting him in a bad position,” the KP coach said. “It is what it is and we’ll move forward from here.”

Holding a 1-0 lead, the visitors continued to control the ball for a good portion of the second half and, in doing so, did not allow the Warriors to pose any real threat.

“We possess and move the ball well, creating a lot of chances in front of the goal,” Hopkinton coach Garrett Sawyer said. “I was happy when our guys put it in when we had those opportunities.”

With under 10 minutes left, Hopkinton’s Josh Hacunda broke into the Warrior’s zone, avoided the KP defense and blasted a shot past Murphy on the left side, sealing the victory. From there on in, it was King Philip against the clock. The Warriors had their opportunities, but just couldn’t capitalize because of the tough Hopkinton defense.

“We teach our guys to be disciplined and keep the ball in front of them, containing it,” Sawyer said. “Today they did a good job of that working in the back.”

Lewis thought his team was doing well offensively, but just couldn’t find the
offensive firepower to get the ball past Hopkinton keeper Greg Roderick.

“We’re moving the ball well, but nobody wants a goal; they just don’t want to do what it takes to finish the goal,” the Warrior coach said. “We’ve been working hard on our attacking, but it’s just not coming through and translating on the field.”

The Warriors will travel to Stoughton next Monday for a Hockomock League contest, while the 6-1 Hillers will be hosting Westwood on Friday.
