KP Boys Hoop Squad Earns 7 Seed

King Philip has been awarded a seven seed in the MIAA Division 2 South Tournament.

For the first time in 11 years and only the fourth time in the school’s history, the King Philip boys basketball team will be participating in the state tournament.

After finishing the season with a 14-8 record and tying the school record for the most wins during the year, King Philip was awarded a seven seed in the MIAA Division 2 South Boys Basketball Tournament.

The upper seed will allow King Philip to host Walpole (a 12-8 ten seed) on Tuesday evening at 7pm in the first round of the tournament.

“This is great, not only for the school and the students, but for the community as well,” KP Coach Sean McInnis said. “The seeding doesn’t matter. I’m from the old school – any seed is a good seed, as it’s a chance to participate in the tournament and show we belong.”

As the first tournament appearance approaches for the team, the Warriors have to feel good about themselves. Having beaten neighboring Franklin, a Division 1 tournament participant, and then concluding the year with a sweep of Norwood by four and Westwood by 21 to win the Westwood Tournament, the Warriors are entering the tournament on a roll.

Although KP will be advancing into the tournament, it will not be an easy task, though they will host the #10 seed Rebels.

“We’ve played well down the stretch, but we know that we need to fix some things and make adjustments if we want to win this game,” the coach said. “Walpole is a very good program in a very good league with a long tradition of success.”

Not only do the Rebels boast one of KP’s former coaches, but they have players who are much taller than the Warriors.

“We’re undersized against them,” McInnis said. “They have some talented big players, and we’re going to have to rebound and defend the three-point shot to win. It’s going to be a tough game, but we’re ready.”
