King Philip Girls Hockey Team Can't Hold On Against Franklin

Franklin scores two goals in the final period to defeat the Warriors 3-1 on senior night.

For the second time this week, the King Philip girls hockey team had a legitimate chance of knocking off a perennial powerhouse.

After falling to Medfield 3-2 on Monday evening, the Lady Warriors took Franklin to the brink before dropping the contest 3-1 at the Foxboro Sports Center on senior night.

“We practiced hard all week for this game,” King Philip Coach Paul Lyons said. “We were looking for something [a win over Franklin] that neither the boys nor girls have been able to do for some time.  Unfortunately, we took some untimely penalties in the third period, and that lead to our downfall.”

Lyons doesn’t blame the girls for the penalties, as they were working hard to keep Franklin away from junior net-minder Alyssa Siegmann. As has been the case throughout the year, the junior played phenomenally enough to keep her team close until the final stanza.

Olivia Florence netted the Warriors' only score on the night in the first period to give KP the early lead. Kristen Haley and Danielle Hamilton assisted on the goal.

Franklin knotted the game up before the period ended, and the score remained 1-1 until midway through the third period.

“It’s disappointing to lose, but we kept our heads up and played a good enough to win,” the coach said.

The Warriors only have one league game remaining (on February 19 at Quincy) before participating in the Cougar Classic in Rockland, a tournament Lyons is hoping to win.

Before the game, the South Eastern Massachusetts Girls Hockey League All Stars were announced. The Warriors will be sending two representatives to Bourne to participate in the February 26 game, as senior captain Giselle Unger and Siegmann will be dressing for the North Division.
