King Philip Football Beats Up On Attleboro 41-7

Charles Ruffin leads the way with six touchdowns and 39 of the Warriors' 41 points.

Right from the get-go, Attleboro knew that it was going to be a long night. King Philip won the toss and deferred until the second half, but still managed to possess the ball first.

The Warriors got the onside kick and went to work immediately.

Senior running back Charles Ruffin took the first play of the game 46 yards into the end zone, and KP never looked back. Ruffin would slice through the Attleboro defense like a hot knife through butter. In fact, one would have thought the KP back was covered in butter the way he slipped through the Bombardier defense, racking up 250 yards rushing on 18 carries, including six touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

“I’ve got to give credit to my offensive line, they brought it tonight,” Ruffin said. “It was great, but a win is a win and that’s what’s important. We did our assignments in practice, and the coach prepared us the best he could.”

Holding onto a 6-0 lead (the extra point was no good), the King Philip defense did their job in not allowing the visiting Bombardiers to get back into the game. Following two runs for a combined five yards, Attleboro coughed up the football for the first of four times (they would lose two). King Philip went right back to work, looking to establish the run and, on the fifth play, Ruffin broke another one, this time from 23 yards out.

With the running game working. Coach Brian Lee decided to go for the two-point conversion as Ruffin once again found the end zone, giving the home team a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Another Attleboro fumble would give the Warriors the ball at the 45. Following a trio of passes and a handful of runs, KP once again found itself deep in
Attleboro territory. Enter Mr. Ruffin, who started to go inside and saw no
opening, so he bounced back outside and scampered down the left side and in for another touchdown (from 25 yards out).

“He was right tonight,” Coach Lee said. “Actually, it was probably the first time he’s felt healthy since the third week of the season. The bye week got him feeling really good.”

As the teams went into the locker rooms, Ruffin had accounted for all 20 of King Philip’s points. His night was far from over.  If he had not stepped out of bounds, Ruffin would have taken back the second half kickoff for yet another touchdown. Instead, the Warriors went back to pounding the ball inside on Attleboro.

On the fifth play of the half, Ruffin broke through the defensive line, stumbled a bit but still managed to keep his balance and once again found the end zone from 41 yards out. John Dillon would find Michael Viola for the two-point conversion and a 28-0 King Philip lead.

Attleboro Coach Kevin Deschenes knew that if his team was going to have any chance of getting back into this game, he was going to have to do it through the air. Unfortunately it just wasn’t happening tonight.

“We were outcoached, outplayed, out-everything. Coach Lee has a very good
football program, and they came out and took it to us,” Deschenes said. “When
you get down 14, 20 points, you have to open it up and then you get out of your game plan. Our kids are better than this; they just didn’t show it tonight. The only time you can prove it is on the field.”

Before the night was over, Ruffin would tack on two more scores from 43 and 12 yards out.

Attleboro would finally get on the scoreboard in between the final two Ruffin touchdowns with one of their own. Chris Walsh would hook up with Malique
Clark for a 36-yard scoring play.

“They [Attleboro] have very good talent and were beginning to get outside on us
before the half, but we were able to fix that,” Lee said. “Getting ahead like
we did really took their running game out of play.”

With only two games left on their schedule (Canton next week at home and at Franklin on Thanksgiving Day), Lee is looking for his team to work hard and take their game to the next level, while hoping someone can beat Mansfield.
