Jake Layman's Going to Madison Square Garden

A freshman at the University of Maryland, Jake Layman is going to get a chance to play in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden Tuesday.

Wrentham's Jake Layman scored 13 points as the University of Maryland men's basketball team defeated the University of Alabama, 58-57, in Tuscaloosa in the quarterfinals of the NIT Tuesday night.

Maryland will now move on to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City to play Iowa, April 2.

"We know the history behind the place and how special it is to play there and who's played there, so it's going to be awesome," said Layman of playing in Madison Square Garden.

With the win, the Terrapins improved to 25-12 on the year and are making their first trip to the NIT semifinals since 2005 and are looking for their first title since 1972. 

Layman had two big second half three-point were keys to his team's win and was also a standout defensively.

"It gave us a boost," said Layman of the three-pointers. "Six quick points helps a lot whenever, so it was good to have."

"(On the press) I try to be long and get steals and deflections whenever I can, and it's working out well for us right now."
