Both Petco and PetSmart have announced they will stop selling pet treats made in China following concerns from pet owners who believe the treats are making dogs and cats sick, sometimes fatally.

San Diego-based Petco was in the process of removing all China-made dog and cat treats from its shelves following the company's decision announced on Tuesday.

"We know some pet parents are wary of dog and cat treats made in China, especially Chicken Jerky products, and we've heard their concerns," Petco CEO Jim Myers said.

"As a leader in the industry and the trusted partner for our pet parents, we're eager to make this transition and to expand our assortment of safe and healthy treats, the majority of which are made right here in the U.S. Very simply, we feel the decision is in the best interest of the pets we all love and, ultimately, for our business."

The U.S. Drug and Food Administration has periodically cautioned pet owners against the treats, though the agency has not been able to clearly link the illnesses to the China-made products. The most recent warning was issued last week.

Petco executives said the treats would be out of their stores by the end of the year.

Phoenix-based rival PetSmart says it will have Chinese-made treats off its shelves by next March.

Each company runs about 1,300 stores.

In addition to avoiding treats MADE in China, pet owners might want to avoid treats & food made in the U.S. and elsewhere, but with ingredients SOURCED from China.

The package has to say "MADE in USA", NOT "distributed by (a U.S. company)". A lot of these items will say distributed by Del Monte Corp. in California, but they're MADE in China. Don't be fooled!

"Petco executives said the treats would be out of their stores by the end of the year. Phoenix-based rival PetSmart says it will have Chinese-made treats off its shelves by next March. " ________________________________________________________ Petco says in 6 or 7 months, while PetSmart says 9 or 10 months before the product is off their shelves. What they mean is, when we've dumped our supplies of these products on our customers, THEN we'll start being concerned. All the while crying alligator tears about how much they care about their customer's pets. ________________________________________________________ They deserve and get NO credit in my mind and should be called out for their greed, not applauded for the decision.

This should backfire on these two companies, I will buy my dog food elsewhere unless they empty their shelves before the end of the year. How many more pets have to die before they do something about it.

Why would we ever even involve ourselves with China in the first place? They were threatening to nuke us and we decided to give them our whole country? Pet food from China is ALWAYS poison. It cannot possibly pass any usa standards
