Senate Votes to Repeal Tax on Technology Services

Boston – Senator Richard J. Ross (R-Wrentham) voted today to repeal the tax on computer and software services that was passed over the summer as part of the transportation finance legislation. The vote followed a deluge of opposition to the tax, citing the negative impacts that the tax would have on this industry in Massachusetts. Senator Ross voted against this tax each time it was presented to the Senate.

“I am proud that the Legislature has acted to repeal a tax that would have proven incredibly detrimental to Massachusetts businesses,” said Senator Ross. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and it is our responsibility to take actions that will protect and stimulate these businesses as a means of fostering economic development and job growth. This tax was a clear step in the wrong direction, and would have drastically hindered the technology industry in the Commonwealth.”

The Senate Republican Caucus offered an alternative transportation finance plan that was rejected by the Senate. The plan intended to raise revenue for transportation and education priorities through reform, innovation and pre-existing sources, without resorting to tax and fare increases.

“While I am relieved to see this unreasonable tax repealed, I hope that it serves as a reminder of the importance of taking the time to adequately consider all facets of an issue before coming to such an impactful decision,” said Senator Ross. “We have a responsibility to properly evaluate all available evidence and alternative proposals to ensure that we are best representing the interests of our constituents and the Commonwealth as a whole.”
