Boston’s Fourth of July Safety Measures

Boston – Senator Richard J. Ross (R-Wrentham) encourages all constituents visiting the Esplanade in Boston for the 40th annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4th to follow all safety and security procedures while enjoying the celebration. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Massachusetts State Police have provided a helpful guide for visitors to utilize when planning their visits: http://www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dcr/events/independence-day-guide-2013.pdf.

“The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular remains a cherished tradition in the Commonwealth and an extraordinary tribute to such a proud holiday for our nation,” said Senator Ross. “I wish everyone celebrating at the Esplanade and throughout the Commonwealth a happy and safe Fourth of July.”

In the interests of safety, various items will be prohibited from the Esplanade on July 4th. Attendees may not bring coolers on wheels, backpacks, firearms, weapons, sharp objects, fireworks, glass containers, cans, propane tanks or grilling equipment. All liquids must be carried in sealed clear plastic containers no larger than 2 liters. Attendees will be allowed to carry in blankets or tarps (up to size 10’ x 12’), folding or beach chairs, coolers carried by shoulder strap or single handle, personal items in clear bags, small clutch bags or purses and pop up tents or canopies without sides (up to size 10’ x 10’). All permissible items must be inspected and brought through security by 4:00pm on July 4th. After that time, only chairs, tarps or blankets (up to 10’x12’) will be allowed through security.

Portions of Storrow Drive in Boston, Memorial Drive in Cambridge, the Longfellow Bridge and the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge will be closed to accommodate spectators. In addition, certain areas of the Esplanade section of the Charles River Reservation will be closed to bikers and pedestrians throughout the course of July 3rd and 4th. All roadways will be closed until the clean-up process has been completed, which is anticipated to occur on Friday morning, July 5th.

Law enforcement urges all visitors to report any suspicious activity they observe on the Esplanade on July 4th by texting keyword “Boston4” to 67238. Visitors may also report any suspicious or criminal activity by calling 911.
