Survey Says: KP to Wait on Snow Day Issue

The results of a snow day survey were announced at the King Philip School Committee meeting Monday night.

The results of a survey asking parents how to deal with a potential shortage of snow days were announced at the King Philip School Committee meeting Monday night.

Committee chairman Patrick Francomano said Superintendent Elizabeth Zielinski, who was not present Monday, left a memo with the results.

"Her recommendation at this time is for us to wait and see how things progress," he said. "The majority of people seem to want to push things out to the end of the year, if need be."

With the tropical storm and Snowtober storms hitting early in the year, the district has already used three of its planned five snow days. This, according to a letter from the district, pushes the school end date to June 19.

With the start of winter approaching, the district is running short of days, as school must end by June 30, and must be in session for a minimum of 180 days. Thus, the district sent out a survey seeking parental input on using days from February vacation or April vacation, or possibly having school on Saturdays.

Francomano said the committee would re-examine the matter in February.

"We may have to look at April," he said. "The problem is, in February, if going to June 30 doesn't give you enough days, you have a problem."
