KP School Committee Looking to Reschedule Budget Process

State delays in determining budget leads committee to examine budget timeline.

The King Philip School Committee discussed changing the district's budget timeline at its meeting Tuesday night.

Committee members pointed out that the state has recently started to take longer to create its own budget. As the district's budget situation could change drastically depending on the state's allocation of funds, there is often uncertainty around the process.

The district, however, is required by its charter to develop a budget by a certain date, meaning it must make revisions once Massachusetts approves the state budget.

Committee Chairwoman Wendy Robeson, though, said any change could not take place before next year.

"Our charter requires that all three towns approve any change in the date," she said. "Next year, we will have to have our meeting on the last Saturday in January."

Robeson, though, did note that the town governments are themselves reacting to the state's delays.

"I know Norfolk is looking to postpone its town meetings to a little later," she said.

Wrentham held its annual town meeting in April, but delayed consideration on most major issues until June for the same reason.
