Elementary School Committee Discusses Polling Places

Current voting location in schools causes disruptions, according to committee.

The Wrentham Elementary School Committee discussed the town's voting location at their meeting Tuesday night.

The town's polling location, at the moment, is the Delaney School cafeteria. The committee agreed that, for big elections, such as the presidential or midterm elections, it is preferable to have the students take the day off and have a professional workshop day for teachers while the voting takes place.

The problem with that location for smaller elections, such as state primaries, is that there are too many school days the students would have to miss. Other locations have been considered, but just don't have the space required.

"There isn't really a great location to host elections outside of the schools," Marsden said.

One compromise that the committee agreed would be the least inconvenient for both the students and voters would be to use the gymnasium.

The only problem  with using the gym is the recently installed wood floors. The committee agreed that they want to limit the damage to the floors, especially in the winter, when sand and salt would damage the floor considerably. Chair Kim Carr suggested using butcher paper or painter's lining to help protect the floor.

"It might get messy, but at least it'll protect the floor," she said.

The committee also approved the minutes of last meeting and the minutes of last meeting's executive session, as well as the FY11 November Close Budget. Next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2011.
