Wrentham Town Meeting Voters Say No to New Building Design

Wrentham votes down a design on a new building for town departments.

The Wrentham Town Meeting approved a loan of about $800,000 for capital improvements fir the fiscal year 2014.

The loan was originally requested at $900,000, the $100,000 for a design on a new building for many town offices including the building department, the health board and the recreation department.

Dubbed “the land use building,” the design project would have created an addition to the aging Wrentham Department of Public Works building to include these offices and take out the DPW offices from the building.

“The building was created as a phase one for the DPW,” said selectman chair Joseph Botaish. “There was another phase coming but it never came. Our proposal would keep that building as a garage and bring the office staff out of there.”

Town finance committee chair Jerome McGovern said the new building would have helped out many departments.

“The recreation director for crying out loud has been working out of a closet for the last seven years,” he said. “The bottom line is all these need to be done and this is the right time to do them.”

The warrant article for the loan was originally set up as a one vote item, but Wrentham voters amended it to split up each individual item.
