Wrentham to Host 21st Annual Fishing Derby in April

Tradition continues in Wrentham.

The Wrentham Lions Club is continuing the decades-old tradition of the Wrentham youth Fishing Derby.

“The kids have been talking about it all year,” chairman of the Wrentham Lions fishing derby Robert Heiselmeyer. “They can’t wait for the derby to happen.”

This will be the 21st derby in Wrentham. The derby will take place at Trout Pond behind the Wrentham DPW and will start April 27 at 7 a.m.

The event is free, and any youth from ages 0-18 can participate. Prizes will be distributed in three age groups. Heiselmeyer said they range from everything from fishing poles to reels, and will be awarded to the biggest catch in each age group.

“The fish will be measured and weighed in each age group,” he said. “We have some older kids, anywhere from 17 to 18-years-old participate in the derby.”

Food and drink will also be provided.

Heiselmeyer said the derby was started because the Lions wanted to provide something for the children of the town.

“We wanted to do something for the children of the town,” he said.
