Wrentham Selectmen Approve Athletic Field Names

Fields will bear names of Dolores Duffy, Robert Bogardus and James Lorusso — all of whom have worked to improve Wrentham Recreation.

The Wrentham Board of Selectmen, at its meeting Tuesday night, agreed to name several little league fields in honor of people who had served the town.

Jeff Plympton, the town's recreation director, brought a number of recommendations to the board.

"We have two fields we'd like to name for the first time, and one to rename: the former Rice Field at Sweatt Complex," he said.

Plympton said the renaming of Rice Field was to avoid confusion with the Rice Complex. The names suggested were Dolores Duffy and Robert Bogardus for fields at the Rice Complex, and James Lorusso as the new name of Rice Field.

According to Plympton, Duffy has been a Recreation Committee member since the 1960s.

"She's been a big advocate of Sweatt Beach," he said. "She's also been the organizer of Wrentham Day."

"She does a lot of work behind the scenes," he added.

Plympton said Bogardus' involvement in town recreation activities went back to the '70s.

"He's also the president of the Wrentham Youth Baseball-Softball Association," he said. "He was a strong advocate of Sweatt Fields being built in the late '70s, early '80s."

Lorusso, Plympton said, has been a benefactor for Wrentham Recreation.

"He's a sponsor of the Wrentham Wroad Wrace," he said. "He also donated the first Recreation Department truck."

The board accepted all of the recommendations unanimously.

Selectman Stephen Langley praised the town Recreation Committee for setting up a process for naming the fields.

"It's very well-documented," he said. "The Recreation Committee has taken great pains to make sure it's done the right way. These names will be on the fields for a long time."
