State Sen. Ross Votes for Unemployment Rate Freeze For Businesses

Measure intended to improve economy.

State Sen. Richard Ross was one of the senators who came out in favor of a bill to freeze the rate businesses pay for unemployment insurance.

Ross, the Wrentham Republican, said this was something the state party had been seeking for some time.

"A lot of us have businesses, with employees and benefits we have to pay," he said. "We understand why Massachusetts is not competitive when it comes to business."

This move, he said, would forestall a nearly 40 percent jump in the rate. Ross said an increase in the rate would only serve to slow job creation.

He said this move should be part of a broader strategy to encourage economic development in the state.

"I don't think freezing the rate alone is enough," he said. "It's one small step, one tool in our toolbox."

The bill was passed by the state House of Representatives and Senate, and was signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick late last week.
