Sen. Scott Brown, Former Boston Mayor Celebrate Law Day in Wrentham

Luminaries gathered in Wrentham District Court to celebrate the rule of law.

United States Senator Scott Brown and former Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn were on hand at Wrentham District Court today to celebrate Law Day.

A massive flag flew over Route 140 in front of the courthouse as part of the day's celebration.

Court Clerk-Magistrate Edward Doherty served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

"On Law Day, we celebrate the fundamental rule of law, which separates our democracy from the dictatorships in the world," he said.

Doherty noted that Senator Brown was first a part of the ceremony in 1998, when he was a town selectman.

"He's since moved on to bigger and better things," he said.

Brown said he had great memories of working as a lawyer in the courthouse.

"This place is a very special place," he said. "It's like the little engine that could — it keeps going despite the financial problems these days."

Brown shared a memory of working with then-Judge (and current State Representative) Daniel Winslow on the case of a kid who stole some CDs. He said he asked Winslow to have the boy write an essay reflecting on how he had let down his family, an echo of Brown's own punishment for stealing record albums as a teenager.

"I'll never forget the opportunity provided by Judge Winslow that day," he said. "I've heard nothing to suggest that boy didn't fulfill his obligations and become a productive citizen."

Brown praised the court workers as hardworking and honest civil servants.

Former Boston Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Raymond Flynn shared stories of his time in Boston, interacting with such notable figures as Jackie Robinson, Ed Koch and Mother Teresa.

Regional Administrative Justice Paul Dawley spoke about the importance of the day.

"In 1958, President Dwight Eisenhower declared a day of national dedication to our principles of law," he said. "This annual occasion allows all of us to recognize the extraordinary legal system for which we work."
