Norfolk Talks Casino Opposition

Casino opposition holds strong in Norfolk. Foxborough selectmen look ahead to regular town business as casino talk remains.

Anti-casino efforts continued Monday evening in Norfolk as 75 people gathered at the Olive Day School to discuss the casino proposed across from Gillette Stadium in neighboring Foxborough.

Traffic, public safety limitations and overcrowded schools were among the biggest concerns addressed by attendees, the Sun Chronicle reports.

At the conclusion of the meeting, residents signed a petition asking Kraft to withdraw the casino plans.

According to the Sun Chronicle, Norfolk selectman James Lehan said that a casino "will impact Norfolk the way we know it."

"It will not be the same," continued Lehan.

Both selectmen boards in and  have voted to oppose a casino.

Meanwhile in Foxborough, the casino debate continues after the selectmen’s 3-2 vote on Tuesday, Dec. 27 to send a letter to Governor Deval Patrick, the state gaming commission and to the Robert Kraft and Steve Wynn organizations stating Foxborough doesn't wish to be considered as a casino host.

Town manager Kevin Paicos and board members report that residents still call looking for explanations and information on the casino issue.

“The phone rings continuously,” Paicos said. He still gets at least 20 emails a day with residents asking to explain his opinion and looking for him to hear their opinions in conversations that last up to an hour.

"They’ve [selectmen] got so much regular business backed up,” noted Paicos. He said the board needs a couple of meetings without the casino on the agenda.

As far as whether a casino proposal will be submitted, board member Lorraine Brue said, “I can’t predict it. The ball is in their court. I hope they will listen.”

For now, she said, “I look forward to doing regular Foxborough business.”
