Hurricane Preparedness Tips from the Wrentham Permanent Building Committee

Start now to prepare for Hurricane Irene.

The Wrentham Permanent Building Committee works to ensure the safe and efficient continuing operation of the town’s public buildings, including schools, Town Hall, Library, and Public Safety building. With the now likely impact of Hurricane Irene this weekend, the Committee developed a list of actions to assist the town in preparing and protecting its buildings.

Many of the items on the list can apply to personal properties as well.  Home owners, property owners, and business owners should review the list and take action as necessary:

  • Secure or move indoors all outside equipment/items (patio furniture, bird feeders, sports equipment, etc.) that can become projectiles in high wind. These items can contribute to storm damage by breaking windows or damaging structures.
  • Anchor all portable buildings (i.e., trailers, storage units) to the ground.
  • Ensure all doors and windows are properly secured. Close blinds and curtains to prevent flying glass in the event a window does break. DO NOT TAPE windows. Taping windows does not prevent them from breaking and only causes larger and more dangerous pieces of glass to become projectiles.
  • Unplug sensitive electronics to protect against a power surge. Power surges are most likely when power is restored.
  • Move sensitive items away from susceptible windows to protect them from rain in the event of a window failure.
  • Ensure gutters, drains, and catch basins are clear of debris.
  • Ensure rooftop equipment is properly secured and loose objects are removed.
  • In the event of disruption of electrical service, shut off gas to minimize the chance for fire loss.
  • Take down flags from flagpoles.

After the storm, if you have any concern about the structural integrity of your building, contact a professional inspector prior to re-occupancy.
