"Beyond the Plaque" for Memorial Day

The Old Fiske Library/Museum/Gallery will be open on Monday, Memorial Day, May 30th from 11 am to 2 pm with an exhibit featuring pictures, facts, and stories of Wrentham's 20th century war casualties (WWI, WWII, Korea and Viet Nam).

A major focus will be the portraits and information about the "Portrait Project", a unique Town effort that gave oil portraits of their lost loved ones to the families of the eleven Wrentham men killed in action in WWII.

The exhibit's goal is to personalize the names that appear on plaques and memorials around Town and are read out loud each Memorial Day at the Center Cemetary. Part of the exhibit will show a bit about Wrentham in those war years so that people can get a feel for the Town as it was when these men went overseas.

"When I hear their names read out loud each Memorial Day and when I see their names on the plaques in Town I wonder ... what were they like ... where did they live ... what did they like to do ... who did they leave behing?" said Andrea Sweed, Wrentham Historial Commission Member. "We hope by having townspeople walk through the exhibit and see these faces, their homes or street they lived on will help to keep their memory alive each time they happen to pass by that street or the war memorials uptown."

The exhibit has been assembled through the joint efforts of the American Legion, the Wrentham Cultural  Council and the Wrentham Historical Commission.
