Holiday Mail Scam Reported in Area

A new scam is making the rounds with claims of a $100 rebate.

With the holidays come scams offering gifts, rebates, and other items. Recently, the Plainville Police were notified of a mail scam going around designed to rip of the targed victimes.

According to the department, the scam is delivered in the mail by USPS in the form of a postcard. The postcard says that the receiver of the letter is eligible for a reward valued at $100. The card goes on to claim that the rebate can be used at multiple stores including Wal-Mart and Target. with instructions to call a phone number to claim the prize.

After dialing the number, the caller is told that they are entitled to the $100 rebate, but they must give a debit or credit card number for a $3.91 processing fee.

The Plainville Police contacted Wal-Mart who said that they do not accept gift rebates.

Anyone who comes across a scam is asked to report it to the proper authorities.
